Whether the car is wired positive or negative ground, that white wire ~should~ be supply voltage. That white wire is NOT coming from the generator. It comes from the ignition switch.
To further muddy the water, if the coil is original to 1956 you need to reverse the connections. If it is a "modern" one (for a negative ground car) you should follow the plus/minus on it..
We need a bit more info. Is the coil a Lucas pre-68 or a later one? Or even a Lucas one?
BPNW is not standing in front of the car, disparaging them is unhelpful to say the least.

I tend to agree with Doc.
Since you misidentified the white wire, incorrectly described where it should go on an "analog" ignition ( whatever that is) and show, with respect, not a lot of knowledge of the subject, I can well imagine that your conversation with the supplier was less than meaningful!
