I have owned this 1955 Triumph TR2 “short door” model for 15 years and finally came to the conclusion that I won't have the time to restore it, as I'm already knee-deep in the body-off restoration of a TR3A. So, I decided to sell it.
During its short, three-year production run – 1953 to 1955 – only 8,636 TR2s were built. This example is one of the rarest TR2s ever made as it was built in Ireland. Commission number TS5460DL, it’s a rare right-hand-drive model as most TR2s were built as left-hand-drive models for the American market. It has an overdrive gearbox and the rarely seen optional front anti-roll bar. The engine is frozen and was told it is original to the car, but I can't prove that. The engine and gearbox are currently out of the car, but they will be re-installed prior to the sale; the car does roll well.
All instruments are in the dash, and it has the correct low-port cylinder head, SU carbs, the rarely seen glass windshield washer bottle, and wire wheels. Original color was Signal Red with the Fawn (light beige) interior that was only available for six months; however, the seat upholstery had been removed years ago, but the door panels and rear interior panels are there.
The car was brought to the U.S. from Ireland when the owner emigrated to the U.S. in 1970, and it was stored in a garage and never used until I bought it in 2010. I have the original license plate that came with the car but do not have the logbook or any documents as the car was never registered or titled when it was brought to the U.S. The title is current and in my name.
This TR2 requires complete restoration but is quite solid, including the floor pans. Many extra parts are included with the sale of the car, including extra fenders, hoods and suspension components.
The car is owned by Richard Lentinello, the former editor-in-chief of Hemmings Motor News and the current publisher of Crankshaft magazine, and resides in Knoxville, Tennessee. Asking price: $5,500
