1951 Austin A40

Trying to replace the driver's side rear end bearing and seal. The axel nut won't take my 1 7/8" or my 2" socket. Ones to small and the other is to big. Is there a 1 15/16" socket???. Any help would be appreciated.

You might try a 50mm if you can find one. It's only .031 oversize.

Thanks for all your help. I found a way and am back on the road. Now if any other 50's Austin A40 owner had any experience with a later model rear end that would fit my car I would appreciate ideas.

Channel locks. My largest and it broke loose with little damage. I don't think the nut needs a lot of torque. Snugged it down and locked it in. I'll keep an eye on it but still wanting to upgrade to more modern rear end. Higher gear ratio and hyd. brakes.

Hello all,
The rear hub nut is octagonal not hex. Without the correct spanner a set of long nose mole grips are a good option.

Graham - welcome to BCF. Here in USA mole grips are often called vise-grips or locking pliers.
