1950cc engine rebuild

I got word from the folks rebuilding my engine. They've finished boring the cylinders for the 1950cc pistons, and they haven't run into any problems so far.

They did find one rod with a bad small end. The rebuild will continue after I get them a replacement.

Stay tuned for further updates.

Did you have the pistons before the boring happened?

I ask, because it seems like a chicken/egg situation:

If you buy pistons, your block may be pitted and have to be bored larger than your new pistons.

If you don't buy pistons, your machinist doesn't really know how large to bore the block.

Maybe this isn't really a problem, and maybe a visual inspection will tell you if pitting is or isn't going to be an issue.

Thanks!

And are you using proper compression height pistons, or did you use the Lotus pistons and have to hack half the strength out of the deck to get back to the correct compression ratio?

BTW, if he is boring to 1950 from standard, there is zero chance he will have pitting deeper than that unless the block was stored under salt water. If he is rebuilding an engine that was already 1950, you'd be right and he'd be wise to have pistons in hand first (always advisable anyway)

When he originally inspected the block, he said he'd need +.060 pistons.

I bought the 1950cc cast piston set that Moss UK sells (before the price went up). They have these made especially for the B-Type motor. They don't use Lotus pistons.

He didn't start boring out the block until I delivered the pistons to him. I debated buying four sleeves at the same time, since a few people recommended that I sleeve the motor, regardless of condition, before going to 1950. However, it looks like the old block held up well.

At the same time I ordered the pistons, I also got a new tube-shock front suspension. I can't wait to see what that feels like.

Sounds like you are in good shape. I know those pistons are expensive, but they are much better than the Lotus alternative.

Now you need a head that will flow enough to make use of the larger capacity!
