Vesuvius

In the article is a picture of plaster casts of bodies I remember seeing in my Latin textbook in high school.

Latin? You had Latin in high school? Year 3 and we translated the Aeneid. Because teacher was testy and ill mannered I got detention on a regular basis. Got even - put Liederkranz cheese a piece at a time into the light fixtures. She turns lights on and oh the odor. Had classes in the auditorium until my deed was discovered during the Christmas holidays. Was never found out. I guess the truth is out now.

Ah the memories you just triggered with your mention of "Latin."

Actually took it in jr. high - 9th grade. Also 10th and 11th in high school. Was in the Latin club, and attended state conventions the last two years.

Quirky me - I really enjoyed it! Still have one of my old textbooks.

Good on ya for the cheese thing!

Was at Pompei last year. Pretty amazing place. If you ever get there, one thing a lot of people don't know is that all the recovered loot is in the Archeological Museum of Naples (Napoli) - which few people visit.

Also amazing is that Naples, which is JUST to the north of Vesuvius, has an emergency evacuation plan (for several million) which is a joke... and nobody much cares in the city.

Latin was required course in my high school. One of the reasons I had to transfer after sophomore year.

Wow, Steve! With the last moniker you got, you shoulda aced Latin! :jester:

mehheh. Had three years of Latin, 9th 10th and 11th grades... Latin I, all three. :smirk:

The teacher was about useless, too. But I tried to be persistent. Math/algebra/geometry/trig, all came easily. English as well. Only the "language" classes dragged the GPA down. They didn't offer Mandarin. :jester:

A semester of French in college finally convinced me that I was destined to be monolingual. feh. I understand and speak more Thai than I do French. :*spit!*:

Stepmother and my dad were convinced that I was going to be a lawyer.

Figure I got my share of Latin

Well Mick, that is a common misconception. I don't speak Italian and I was an alter boy for masses in Latin. Neither helped a lot.
