1932 MG J2 vs 1967 Jaguar XKE

I think I am leaning towards the J2.
I think from the standpoint that another J2 of this quality won't be as easy to come by as another XKE.

The point I was trying to make, exactly.

Hey Matt,

Why not post a pic or two of ea. car. Man, I`m sure everyone here would "LOVE" to see both!

Happy Motoring,

Russ

Here you go!

WHOA! I see your dilemma!

First reaction is that I'd be all over the J2! The cat can wait...

Knowing what a J2 looks like, and an "E" type, I had no problem with suggesting the J2.
J2 is probably a little old and rare for me, but I have always wanted to have a TC, RHD, of course, just as a warm-weather backup.

That particular J2 is RHD, so for me that's a plus.

Aren't all J2s rhd, just like all TC's are rhd. Thought the TD was the first real "made for export" MG and the first to get lhd.

Don't know. Suspect so.....thought I'd seen a LHD TC at a show.
Maybe it was an owner kluge.

Production TCs were all RHD from the factory (no provision made for LHD). I'm pretty sure all previous sporting MGs were RHD only as well. TD was the first LHD.

Matt, get the one that excites you the most. I see a purchase of a hobby car as an emotional one, not a practical one, so go with your heart. A good sort of dilemma to have.

Grab the J2! I'm a hard core pre-war car fan - fenders and head lamps and tall wire wheels - oh my!!!

Here are two more photos of the cars in question... :jester:

By the way, you're in luck, TOC. They never made LHD J2s or TCs.

EDIT: Oops, just saw page two. The YT was the first left hand drive M.G., and the TD the first LHD M.G. sports car. There are a few TCs out there which have been modified to LHD but they were never that way originally.

Must have been what I saw at the show.
LHD TC.
Funny, they just don't "look" right in LHD form.

I will weigh in just because I have always lusted after an e-type.

A few have said if you want a car to drive get the e-type. Certainly a more modern car, better able to keep up with traffic, keep you dry when it is wet out or warm when it is cold out. While true and while definitely the e-type is a winner if you are talking about highway driving, that being said, while I have never driven a J2, a friend took me for a ride in a TB a couple ears ago. What a hoot, blast to zip around town in, a fairly unique driving experience, even more so than an E or other 60s british sports cars. feels like you are going fast even when you are going slow.

Both are beautiful cars, as stated by many the J2 is much rarer than the E and less likely to come along.

It sounds like you have a likelihood of purchases of this nature in the future. So, if that is the case, maybe J2 now and E later.

For me a chance to own either would probably be a once in a lifetime never another chance for anything like again in my life, so a harder decision, but if an e-type could still be viable purchase in the foreseeable future the J2 seems like the pick. But it is you choice and your bucks.

Just for reference, a TB is a larger and faster car than a J2. I fully agree with your assessment of the driving experience of course, but the J2 will be even more primitive. I wouldn't hesitate to tour in either one, but I think most people would prefer the TB.

Pulled the trigger on the J2. Can't wait until Intercity delivers it!!! Thanks all for your input.

Lucky guy - congrats!
