1931 BMW to be at local show

I just found out that there will be a very rare 1931 BMW IHLE 600 Sports Roadster at the show. This completely restored car is 1 of only 6 known to be in existence, the others all in Europe.

Yes, I will get photos. The thing is that this might be the only chance for anyone to see this car. Seems that BMW has made it known that they WILL acquire the car from the owner at some future time.

From what I have learned about this show I feel somewhat out of place being there.

For show info and map.

Hey Tom,

Don't sweat it... If it's an open invite (from the sounds of it), just do it!

I know I'd be there in a heart beat, every year, nothing that cool exists in Alberta here, nothing even close... :smirk:

And I look forward to seeing the photos of that BMW, plus all the other great cars that will be there

Ah yes... Still no need to feel that way...

What has impressed me the most locally, is one collector (Ferrari 365 GTC/4, Mercedes Gull Wing, plus...) who is as equally thrilled with the driving experience from his far humbler 1960's Alfa Romeo coupe...

I am taking my TR3B to Das Awkscht Fescht this weekend. It is a decent 20-footer, but no show car. There are always some special machines in the over 1000 cars on Saturday and Sunday. Tomorrow is my first time at the Friday show, so I don't know what all will be in that group, but it is just fun to be a part of the show...

Have fun Tom, and share some photos...

I had a 70 442 convertible in college. It was by no means a show car but it wasn't a rot box either. I would go to car shows and enter. It was fun being there, meeting people, having a good time. People would walk by and I actually heard comments - What's that doing in the show. I'd think "Take a look around, show me the other 70 442 ragtops, and oh yeah, where's yours?" Then I would just shake my head and smile. For me, the best part was the dash plaques, I have a board with all of them on it. That's more meaningful than a wall full of dust gathering trophies. imo!

Go to the show, take in the cars and have fun!

Of course you guys are right. We have been in several shows this year but this one seems somewhat intimidating. Shirley and I spent all day yesterday cleaning our TR6. All it needs now is to wash the exterior and put the spare and tools back. That we will do the night before. Ours may not be the prettiest car there but it may be the cleanest!

Today we will be at the State Fair to check out our display there. We were invited to display some of our hand-made circus train models, wagons and cars, etc in "G" scale(1:22). They must have liked our display because we have been invited back next year.

<span style="font-style: italic">"Under the hood is the first-ever BMW car engine -- a four-cylinder, 15-horsepower, 743-liter piece of heaven that is as basic as engines can get. The fan has just two blades and the fan belt is leather. There is no fuel pump; instead, there is a gravity feed that drips gas to the carburetor."</span>

Wow, how did they fit a 743 liter engine under that bonnet? :hammer:

It was cool of BMW to supply some of the hard-to-get parts.

An interesting article, and I love the public comments under the article, quite a good read actually...

As for that 743 litre engine, perhaps maybe 743-cc?

I am looking forward to seeing it.

It happens that there is a serious collector within about 5 miles of the show location. He has several old Jags and other cars. Including an AC Cobra, a Jag Silk car that raced in Europe and at the Brickyard. He likes to take his cars to Elkhart Lake and run in the vintage races. I am hoping he will have some cars there.

Shirley and I just got home from the show and had a great time. The cars were fantastic and we made many new friends. I will get some photos together and post. But for now here is a sample.

The blue car is the '31 BMW, the black car is a '29 Ford race car, and the third photo should spark some interest in the MG crowd.

Is that last photo a supercharged M.G. Q-Type with its supercharger cover removed? From around 1934?

Very nice... It looks like they parked the BMW in a nice viewing spot, far too often some of the neat cars at a show are in terrible spots to get a good photo...

Hi Tony, It was a 1933 J2.

Sherlock, I told the owner that I wanted some photos for the forum and he invited me into the area so I could take them. Quite a story behind it. I will put something together over the next couple days and post it.

J2...interesting....the grille made me think Q...thought the J2's had slats in their grille!

Still beautiful car...

Me either, Tom....but I really like the photos! & those old cars have probably been changed over time as they were raced & damaged...J2, nice!!
