i've been contemplating wheel choices for my project in the past couple days too. every now & then when i get overwhelmed with dealing with the fire & & the loss of the shop, i take a few mins & focus on what i want to do when the rebuilding is finished. i'm down to three choices right now.
1. widen the stock wheels to 7"
2. go with the konig "minilite" style wheel in 16x7"
3. change the lug pattern to 5 lug & use the 2005 mustang v-6 16x7"wheel. i think if the centers were glass beaded then cleared with a flat clear, they would give the feel of the old halibrand magnesium knock off wheels. this idea will depend on the offset of the stock wheels, so probably not doable without spacers.heres a quick paint shop mock up:
Ah, so it would appear. What about the wheel would make it "for racing purposes only"? Wouldn't a racing wheel have higher tolerances than a regular wheel? I'm pleading ignorant here.
A big fat NO, especially in the more expensive three piece race wheels, weight is everything and why you are paying so much for that type of race wheel, those aluminum half rims are extremely thin, I would never, ever use one for the street, and hose 3 piece wheels have to be rebuilt from time to time, I rebuilt my Joungbloeds about every two seasons. Panasport for their race wheels, same as Superlite did with it's GTR race wheels, these are just one piece street wheels that have more material machined off them and then load tested, but not DOT tested, if you break one, it's yours, plain, and simple, just like everything else on a race car.
I realized that I when I first posted this question, that it was prompted by finding a 17" panasport look-a-like wheel (the Panasports, Rewinds and Konigs only being available up to 16" dia). Rota Wheels.
Found this comment on ebay: "TRIUMPH OWNERS THAT GO AHEAD AND BUY THOSE 16 X 7 PANA SPORTS WHEELS ARE TAKING A VERY HIGH RISK IN THE REAR WITH AXLE FAILURE...THOSE TRIUMPH OWNERS SPORTING 16 X 7 INCH WHEEL DON'T KNOW OR DON'T CARE. ONCE THEY GO AHEAD AND INSTALL SOME WIDE LOW PROFILE TIRES, THERE IS AN EXTREME AMOUNT OF STRESS PUT ON THE REAR STUB AXLE..."
