1500cc transmission questions

Someone brought a 1500cc gear box to me semi stripped of it's outside stuff and said "fix it". I've been through a number of LBC transmissions but not one of these.

Is there a way to accurately identify which model it came from, Midget or Spitfire?

I have taken most of it apart, but have run into something that I should ask about before I break it.

The speedo drive gear on the output shaft is very reluctant to depart from it's perch on the shaft and with the gear itself being plastic I don't want to break that part trying to drive it off. It looks like it was pressed on without snap rings to locate it.

Any words to the wise as to how to get it off without a disaster?

AND

In looking at this thing I already know that I am going to need a reverse idler and the 1-2 speed gear hub, and possibly the cluster. Moss shows NLS on the cluster and the hub, so I am going to need another vendor on at least those bits. Any suggestions?

Jack, this is what I read here:

https://www.triumphspitfire.com/substitute.html

"Gearboxs can be interchangeable (if the correct rear housing is fitted that will take both sorts of mountings), but the gearset is entirely different - being a modified Marina 1300 set. All the other gearbox parts are interchangeable ie hubs, synchro rings, bearings, forks. The same genius who decided on the engine part numbers was probably in charge at this point - take the mainshaft, the Triumph version has a hole in for a ball bearing to lock the thrust in place that fits under second gear, the MG version doesn't - brilliant planning making virtually identical parts in different factories under two different part numbers and was probably part of the reason for British Leyland's problems."

the mainshafts seem to be different

I'd get another box. They can be found cheap. I've seen some for $75 before.

I once knew a guy who would have immeadialty walked over and thrown it in the trash, stick his hand out and say, "That'll be $150."

Man he was a funny guy!

Thanks guys ! Every little tid-bit helps. Please keep them coming.

can you get to the snap ring for the bearing w/ the gear still on? If so, just press the bearing off and the gear will come with it. If it breaks, oh well, it was shot anyway. Anything too brittle to resue is toasrt.

Sometimes "fix it" means stuff breaks.

Thanks to everyone !!

That plastic speedo gear is a "best guess" hammer fit situation. It's durn hard to get off, but replacements are readily available. If you have more money than time, cut it off.
