1500 gearbox go clinky-clinky

I tore into my gearbox because it was making a clinky-clinky noise in first gear. I was pretty sure it had something to do with the reverse idler, and low and behold the idler gear was shredded. That is replaced and everything else looks pretty good except...I noticed that there is a lot of play in the reverse idler spacer. I am wondering if that could be the source of the clinky-clinky noise.

What do you guys think?

Ps. The Haynes Manual instructions for removing the speedo gear are complete bunk. Ignore them. The speedo gear taps off easily with a dull chisel at the base.
