1500 engine rebuild, suggestions for improvements?

recordsj said:
From your statement of balancing it appears to be more of a good thing for a car that you race. Since my car is not for racing (just used as a street car and a fun car to drive), what other improvements can I make that when I do the rebuild can I do which will not add a lot of $$$ but will help improve reliability/durability and if it adds performance then it is just an added bonus.

Umm.. the whole reason racers make these mods in the first place is to improve reliability/durability. Some yield more performance, some are debatable.

What's your budget?

My budget kind of depends on what other kind of work I need to do on it after I tear it down. At this point I know that I have a bad piston and/or cylinder wall on #3. But of course when I do the rebuild and have the engine torn apart I would probably be replacing other components as needed.

Other than balancing, what other mods are out there to increase reliability/durability and cost estimates of that kind of work?

Sounds, like you have 2 possibilities.

1. Build the rocket that everyone describes - oversize pistons etc. etc.

OR

2. Build your engine as is with

a) balancing
b) the best of gaskets etc.
c) possibly glue your thrust bearing in (can't hurt)
d) I think you can get bronze thrust bearings - Hap? (I know you can for TR's)
e) 1300 cam with bearings if you want.

Other than that, good oil and just take care of it and drive it. Bottom line is this, yes, 1500 is a tad more fragile because of the thrust bearings, in reality as a hobby car, if you take care of it will last longer than you. We love nothing more than solicited and unsolicited advice. In my experience most of it costs more money than I have and delays driving (sorry guys) :grouphug: Pull it apart, get the block boiled and measured, rebuild and get the heck out there and drive. :driving:

Payen gasket set
ARP head studs and rod bolts
Vandervell (or tri-metal) bearings
1300 cam bearings/cam
New oil pump.
Oil cooler.
Frequent thrust washer inspection/replacement.

I like spending other peoples money.

How about CHROME, they always run better and faster when they have lots of chrome.

Chrome won't get ya Home- But you will look good pushin'
