True also Mark, but with wood, at least there's SOME amount of deformation/absorbtion of force. Not transmitting it as a *shock* on the edge of the block, rather immobilising the crank ~softly~ and shocking the nut instead, compared to the "starter" method.
 
Have to admit...The starter method made me wince at first.

My most spectacularly, near catastrophic, experience in auto maintenance was when I left a 14" crescent wrench on the crank pulley nut.(of course it was not properly braced at the time)
It flew across the garage (nearly taking my head off) and embedded itself in the drywall inches from me Mum's concourse E-type.

Did you try Hap's suggestion?
 
Yep. I shouldn't tell you this but I have a problem with with lefts and rights. In my first attempt I put the wrench on the passenger side in spite of Hap's very clear instructions. It made a might wallup on the drivers side, but did not budge the nut.
 
Yeah, but it might've been just the 'oomph' needed to knock it loose enough that your other option finally worked....sometimes if I can't gt something loose, I'll tighten it just a bit...sometimes just getting it to move a pinch one way or the other is all it takes.
 
Shrapnel makes a most peculiar high pitched warbling sound.

The first time you hear it, gives no indication of how damaging it can be (sort of like an interesting songbird)

Kind of makes you want to lift your head and listen.
 
hehee... "Prarie dog syndrome". I'm ~notorious~ among my friends for *ducking* my head on strange noises. THEY laugh. We'll see... the other contra-survival thing peeps do is "poke" at stuff: OOH! Wazzat?! touch-touch. Not this li'l duck... uh-uhh. I just LOOK.

Please excuse my "BBS naivete" but what exactly is a maggot other than fly larve? I'm sure there is a deeper meaning here.

Most of the time, mechanical questions aren't answered immediately with concise stepwise instructions for repair.

There are a number of reasons for this.

Quite often there is a certain amount of banter that goes on between various people who post here while they/we figure out how to solve a particular problem.

Some of us were referred to as maggots for being off topic too much and using this forum as a "playground".

While I sympathize with those who are experiencing car trouble, sometimes the only thing you can do is try to cheer them up.
 
I remember the post that seemed to bring this up. I just wondered if there was a deeper meaning. Guess I'm a maggot too since I hijacked the topic to suit my own needs...lol
