TR6 14x7 wheels feasible for a TR4 or Tr6?

I have a set of these (not polished like in this sample photo);

Are they useful for either car?

IMO (I don't even bother with the 'H' anymore) the low rider look you would get with those (and the appropriate tires) wouldn't look the best on a TR.

To my eye those big wheel wells on the TRs look right when well-filled with a tire/wheel combo that produces a 24+" diameter.

Of course, the best thing would be a photo of the look -- either the real thing if someone has it or a photoshop of, say, MGB wheels on a TR4.

Not the best shot (and he has since fixed up the body work better), but here's what they look like on a TR4

Okay, that should be helpful. I think they actually work well with the overall approach of that 4A -- so I would say it depends on what look & function you are wanting.

Thanks guys - I wasn't sure if the old tires on the rims was making them look, um, bulbous or if it was just the nature/size of the rims.

I'm not really looking for a tire sticking beyond the fender look.

I imaging they'd be pretty similar on a TR6, no?

Years ago, I had a TR4. The first thing I did was widen the rims. I did this myself by cutting the outside of the original rims and the inside and center of another set I bought. The modified rims were around 5 1/2 inches. I mounted a set of Dunlap SP190 (?) radials. The result was a taller and wider tire.

The modification greatly improved the handling of the car.

Now I am not advocating you do the same modification (it can still be done), but the 5 1/5 inch TR6 rims will give you the same effect.

This is a picture from 1967 where if you look closely you can see how well they filled out the wheel wells. (oh, I had no problems with the tires rubbing anywhere on the body or frame.)

If it's a TR style bolt pattern, then those would also fit a Z car wouldn't they? I believe the Z's were 14" (later Zx Turbo had 15") and those would look period correct on a 240z.

Or go +1 and put them on the X1/9

Tom, your wheels are less wide than the ones in Randall's pic so I don't think wheel protrusion would be as big of an issue. Also adding to the "funny" look of the 4 is on top of smaller wheels they have low profile tires.

Indeed, I believe that was the intended application.

I've got a similar set in 5.5x15 and I'm pretty sure that's where they came from. FWIW, mine have just a bit more offset than the TR6 wheels, enough that 205/55 tires would rub the fenders on my TR3. The same tires don't rub when mounted on TR6 wheels.

The extra 1.5" is all to the outside of the car, as otherwise they would hit the suspension (or the rear frame on a TR3). It's possible he has some spacers behind them (for suspension clearance), but I don't think so.

Which were required in order to clear the fenders without making large modifications to them. That was the reason the owner went to 14" rims, so he could use wide tires without having to chop up the fenders.

Am I correct in assuming (from some of the replies here) that a 14" -- one inch smaller than stock -- will clear brakes and suspension components on a TR? Aside from a "lowrider" look, I can't think of a single good reason to go to a smaller diameter wheel nowadays! And Spitfire and TR7/8 owners often complain that there's little in the way of "performance" tires available in 14", let alone the stock 13" diameter those cars sported originally....

I don't think they would clear on the earlier cars with 11" discs, but depending on the wheel, might fit on later cars with the smaller front brakes. If I see the owner, I'll ask him.

And to some extent, it's not the wheel diameter so much as the overall diameter that folks are looking for. IOW there are some choices in low profile 14" tires (eg Tire Rack shows 9 "high performance" tires in 195/60-14) but most people aren't willing to live with the side effects (reduced ground clearance, speedometer error, look silly) of such short tires.

IMO the +1, +2 (or even +3) wheel changes are to side-step these problems with modern low profile tires.
