I'll be driving to Richmond,Virginia, leaving here on September 10th.Would like to meet up with other members on the way. I just figured out a rough draft of my plans - subject to changes... Eureka - Reno,Nevada Reno - Midway,Utah Midway - Denver Denver - North Platte,Nebraska North Platte - Adair,Iowa Adair - Cedar Rapids,Iowa Cedar Rapids - Bourbainnis,Ill Bourbainnes - Warsaw,Indiana Warsaw - Paducah,Kentucky Paducah - Chattanooga,Tennessee Chattanooga - Seveirville,Tennessee Seveirville - Charlotte,North Carolina Charlotte - Richmond,Virginia Add 1 day for layovers. Any suggestions to routes to take (opposed to the interstates)? Our Daughter is getting married on September 26,in Amherst,Virginia,so I need to get there a couple of days early. I think that I've found a van to buy.I plan on buying it,driving it toRichmond,& sell it there,& fly home. - Doug

Doug - sounds like a great trip. But ...

You're going to buy a car in California? I assume get it registered so you can drive it legally.

Then you're going to try to sell it in Virginia? Will you even have permanent registration papers by the time you get to Virginia?

How long will you stay in Virginia? Unless you've already got a buyer waiting, you may be in Virginia a *long* time.

Tom

Consider renting a small RV. Should be lots of room, cheap place to stay along the way(I you want to avoid hotels) without the worries of breakdowns.

If I remember correctly, you're moving stuff to her??

I just checked for a one way Penski small (12') truck rentall its about $1050 +gas for 11 days.
I probably have to do that to Vancouver this summer or fall

Wait, I've got a better idea; instead of buying a van just drive the Midget.

What could possibly go wrong? :smile-new:

And watch out for those tornadoes along your route. I'd be scared s%%#less to live in Kansas or Oklahoma although tornadoes are not unknown in CT and MS - but - they're nowhere near as violent as those twisters they get out there. Years ago, I met my son in Vegas when he graduated college in LA. We drove cross country in his RX-7. As we approached Kansas, I told him my tornado line quoted above. He said "Dad - you're always talking about tornadoes". We pulled into Wichita and the first thing we saw was a guy sitting on a folding chair guarding a trailer park after a tornado had ripped through. The Ford Agency was also hit - the roof was torn off. I said "Now do you believe me". I never heard another word from him after that...

Tom, I'd buy the van well ahead of time,& have people who couldsell it for me in Virginia. Don, I checked Penske also - but the nearest one is three hours away, plus I'd have to get the truck back to the rental place right away, when I get there. They only give you 12 days to return it. If I buy a van, they could wait to unload it,after they got back fromtheir Honeymoon.I know - she could also rent a mini-storage. Just looking at my options right now - this won't happen until themiddle of September. Our Daughter's getting married the end of September. - Doug

You could also have them pay for it, sign it over to them when you arrive and let them do what they want to get the money back out. Then you're not time constrained.

Thanks for the input - decided to go with the Penske truck.I'll have Datsun B210/Ford Cortina MKII parts that I can delivercheaply, along the way. - Doug

A wise decision! Have a great trip!

Unless you have really bad luck odds are you won't see a tornado even if you go looking. Hooligans, women of questionable character and various road warriors abound and may make the journey more interesting. Your welcome here although September will likely find me on the road looking to meet some of those same characters. We tend to travel before Memorial Day and after Labor Day.

Richard, Still deciding the route.I have a Cousin in CR,but not sure ifI'll have the time to visit with her. - Doug
