13b???

has anyone done a 13b in an mgb???

I've looked at my 340-B statement in my MG...but I have to claim ignorance here...

What is a 13-B?

a mazda rotary...a wankel...depends on who you talk to

i know it is popular in spridgets but has it been done in an MGB

13B was one of the Mazda rotary engine families... a really nifty engine family, indeed! The 13B series actually dates from 1972 or so, and continued until about 2002 - but that's misleading because there were LOTS of different versions. Also, Mazda made other engines besides 13B's in the same years. The 12A came earlier and the 13B was derived from it, but the 12A continued in some vehicles.

The 13B I usually think of was the version that made 1984 and 1985 RX-7 GSL-SE's special compared to earlier RX-7's (which had 12A engines). In the GSL-LE, the 13B produced about 135hp. The last 13B's had twin turbos and produced about 280hp...

I've seen one 13B fitted in an an MGB, but I don't have photos. (The owner was from somewhere around Roanoke VA, and built his car in the early nineties.) The owner made the installation look EASY. No surprise there, I guess, because the engine is physically tiny.

Here are a couple photos of an MGA with a 12A engine...

(note: more photos and information about this car will be added soon!)

I really admire these engines... but they don't suit my personality or driving style. Something about the sound they produce makes me very nervous.

Ah...yes, in fact at MG '92 (NAMGBR) in Peterborough, Ontario, Canada, there was a blue MGB with a Wankel. I believe this car has been to Grand Rapids, MI as well.

There was a rotary-powered MGB at the Moss Britfest (here in NJ) a few years back. It was a light color and had a lowered, "Speester-style" windshield. The owner told me it was a complicated job because, even though the engine is small, it's a "funny shape".
And I wouldn't exactly call a 13B in a Spridget "popular". I've seen two and one was a tube frame. The other (the yellow car that was featured in Grassroots) took a long time to get right I was told.
I saw a Mallock with a 13B yesterday (at our TT at Pocono raceway). The engine had to be offset quite a bit compared to the regular BMC engine due to the odd shape of the rotary.
Probably the nicest swap that used to be popular in Spridgets was the old 1600 Kent engine and 4 speed trans (from Cortinas or Pintos). These days, the British "K" motor with the Ford Sierra 5 speed is a somewhat popular swap.
A good, but not easy swap for MGBs is an 1800 Miata engine and trans.
When all is said and done, my favourite engine in the MGB is a nice, "worked" BMC 1800.
And I think Spridgets are best with a nice 1275.
My tuppence.
