13" tires?

Hi folks. Another BCF member suggested I ask you guys:

I'm looking to buy a new set of radials:

185/80R13

Yep - 13" rims. Not for a Midget, but for my old Mercedes.

Don't want (and can't afford) new 14" wheels plus the resulting "modifications and re-calibrations". My present 13" wheels are original, but are straight and true. My 1984 vintage tires are long of tooth.

Where would you guys find 185/80R13 tires? Touring (not winter or all weather) preferred. White or black wall, but not "classic" or vintage designs.

I was referred to TireRack.com, but just heard from them and they have only one 13" tire: Goodyear Marathon, for trailer use only. (don't know what that really means)

The plan is for rural and highway driving in good dry weather; not for concourse competitions or bad weather conditions at all.

Thanks all.

Re: 13" tires?

So you don't like the Vredestein Classic?

Re: 13" tires?

Vredenstein are great tires. But wherever I look they're going for about $125 per tire, not including shipping, mounting, balancing.

As there are (were?) good 185/80R13 tires for around $50 each, I'm staying in that ballpark.

Also interesting that I just went to the Vredenstein website itself, and for the life of me, I can't figure out how to search by tire size.

argh.

Re: 13" tires?

try DiamondBack tire if you want a classic tire. I haven't seen 185/80r13 in a looong time at the local tire shops.

Ooo they have them but spendy.

Re: 13" tires?

There is a small size difference but I would look close at 185/70 for your replacements. Prices aren't too bad.

Good Luck

Re: 13" tires?

I guess the last time I got tires was four or five years ago... I may be in for a shock soon.

Re: 13" tires?

Aha! now we're getting somewhere. A different size gives me more options.

The 185/80R13 is the equivalent to the original 6.70/13 tire, per M-B.

Is there some "magic chart" that will give me replacement options for that 6.70/13?

I don't know how to "see" the difference between 185/80R13 and 185/70R13, other than in words. I know that a 14" wheel can be used on the car, but as I'm staying with the 13" wheels I have now, which have *plenty* of room in the wheel well, where can I find my options?

Thanks all.

Thanks Bill. I'd been poking around on the 'net for several days; slow process when you don't know if a vendor might have the size until you go through a zillion menus.

Onward through the fog!

Re: 13" tires?

Thanks Nial.

Is there some graphic and/or chart somewhere that would show me what those numbers actually mean, and what the tire profile looks like?

Re: 13" tires?

I found https://www.performanceplustire.com/ when I was poking around looking for 175/65-14s. I have yet to find a source that carries more brands. They seem to have the stuff that Tire Rack doesn't/won't carry. (All the off brand, and foreign?)
