Hi group....Yesterday my starter died and I took it apart this AM. I found that there are 2 broken brush springs. Tried to find them in Moss and VB catalogs but no luck. Anyone know where to find them? The style is a concentric spring with a push bar on one end and a slot in the middle at the other end. Thanks for your help....Don

They are hens teeth.

When I needed some of these a year ago I wrote several eBay sellers who had various NOS electrical bits until I found someone who had a set of the springs.

Apart from that, the only other lame suggestion I have is to buy a junk starter for the parts.

Sorry. I did not mean to sound like the voice of doom and gloom. I was just venting my experiences concerning my own disappointing hunt for the same parts.

I was serious about my other suggestion to take the springs from a donor junk starter. I believe there are two basic types of Lucas inertia starters (not referring to the myriad of different Bendix units on them). There should be those with stamped plates at the "brush end" and those with "cast" end plates. As long as you find a motor with the same type of end, you should be able to use the brush springs out of it.

Try a call to these guys:
Richter Auto & Truck Electric in Oceanside CA.
760) 757-1201
They have been in business for four generations and have rebuilt just about anything auto electrical related you can think of including wiper motors and starters.
Worth a call!

Hi Guys....Thanks for the help about the BE starter brush springs. I was able to locate some here locally and I installed them and the starter over the weekend. The BE is running great again. I got them from [northlinerebuild@aol.com]. The old guy there says they are an authorized Lucas repair shop. He knew my starter type as soon as I came in the door. Made me feel good.

Excellent! I am glad you didn't have to resort to buying a used one for parts.
