I have a 1275 that was re-worked by Rivergate, lived recently in a Morris Delivery, and was painted Chevy Orange. While removing the offending paint I decided to pull the timing cover, gears, chain and backing plate. I noticed an odd shaped hole due north of the crank and west of the cam. The hole is about the size of a dime and an odd shape. If it is a breather hole it was obviously made on a Friday. Good, bad, problem......?
Also, how much play should there be on the cam chain on the upper side? The teeth on the gears seem kind of sharp. I was planning on replacing both gears and chain but was curious. The chain may have been new at the rebuild but I doubt the gears were replaced. There appears to be enough slack that everything has a chance to be a few degrees off.
Now that I have the block down to bare metal anyone have an opinion as to who makes the best paint? I am disposed to break the rules and use Big Healey metallic green only because it is more pleasing to my eye then the darker green.
