1098 to 1275 swap list

I bought a '70 1275 this week and I've been reading up on swapping it in place of my 1098. I know I'll need to change to the crossflow radiator with the overflow and I know '70's came with a charcoal can for fuel loss so I'll have to get one of those. The 1275 I bought will come with a distributor and alternator. I plan on using the transmission that's on my car now. It is a ribcase from a later car (it must be-- it has a reverse switch) so that will be fine. Is there a full list of necessary parts posted online already? If not, do you guys mind helping compile the list? I have a lcb exhaust that i think will transfer to the new motor but will it work if i plan on using su's on a standard intake manifold? I'm going to collect the necessary parts slowly and do the swap eventually.

Pictures of the new 1275 are on the site in my signature

thanks,
sean

Sean - others will chime in, but I seem to remember that their was a difference in height somehow on the 1275 vs 1098..which meant a 1098 header would not work on a 1275 w/o mods(?)
You don't HAVE to switch to cross flow rad..lots of BE's running around with a 1275 and downflow. I'm performing the same swap as you (1098 - 1275) and I am planning on using the downflow. To do this, you need the original 1098 t-stat housing to get the hose pointing the right direction.
For the carbs, I'm planning on using the ones from my 1098..and I'm skipping all the emissions stuff. Sounds like you got the trans covered..
With the 1275 head, you'll have the option of placing the h20 temp sensor in the head vs in the rad on the 1098. I'm planning to just plug the rad bung.
Just remember to swap your batt cables around (if car is not neg grnd now!)

That is all I can think of. mounts are the same.

I agree with Devin, Sean, skip the emissions stuff, you can use the radiator you've got, and if you need a 1275 exhaust manifold, I have a couple in my garage we can work something out on! I would say use the KISS principal...Keep It Simple, Stupid!! :jester:

Actually, I just looked at the picture of your 1275...It sure looks like you have everything you will need right there in the pic! Just pull the 1098 and drop in the 1275!! An afternoon's worth of work!!

I don't know about this stuff and haven't done it, ... but there's something about the difference between the flywheels of the two and the ribcase.. It's any easy swop, but should be addressed.

The LCB will work fine.

You'll need to change the clutch, clutch slave cylinder and slave cylinder pushrod.

You may also need to change the carb needles to get it running properly.

Also think about crankcase venting. 1275's need plenty of crankcase ventilation. Not sure how you're 1098 is set up (i.e. with or without PCV valve), but at a minimum you'll need a vent line with PCV valve running from the breather on the timing cover to the intake manifold. It's also a good idea to have an independent vent to atmosphere from the valve cover, and if you've got a mechanical fuel pump blanking plate on the side of the block, you can also add another vent there if needed.

Thanks guys, it's great to hear that I can use my current radiator and exhaust manifold if I want to.

As far as using the same carb I'm running now, I don't think I will. I have a dcoe40 on my 1098 and although that will work fine on a stock 1275, I'm a little excited about being able to use full rev range again with standard su's.

Devin, I'll update this post if I come across anything else. Keep me posted if you get to your swap first!

Thanks again,

Sean

The 1275 should mate up to the ribbed-case trans just fine! You may have an issue with the throw-out bearing though!

Hey Sean, you do not need the charcoal canister unless you just want it. most people have removed them, but if you want one I have one you can have for postage. Alan
