Changed water pump and filled with 6 qts of AF. Ran engine and heater hoses are hot but the hose from the thermostat to radiator is not very hot. Temp on gauge only goes up to 120 degrees after running for about 30 minutes. It used to go to 175. Think thermostat is stuck and will not open. Any way to diagnose that without removing the housing?

Other than losing all of that new Antifreeze all over the driveway is there a reason why not to remove the three bolts and change out the thermostat? I know they can be troublesome to remove. As I recall there are a couple of different thermostats, something about it needs to be deeper or something like that. An off the shelf thermostat will not necessarily work. If temps aren't going up, chances are thermostat is stuck in the open position. That's a good thing vs. stuck closed and overheating. Someone else will chime in with the thermostat answer in a couple of minutes.
