100 Sidescreens

I just picked up a pair of sidescreens that are I beleive original, unmolested condition. Which means that the clear vinyl has browned out and will need to be replaced. I commenced cleaning them up a bit this weekend and have a couple of questions.

1. What finish would be the outside trim metal. It looks like this might be chrome plated, but not a really high gloss chrome?

2. What color would the inside frames be painted. Looks like silver paint to me?

3. Would there be a signalling flap on both sides of the car?

Thanks for the input
Simon

1. The outside trim metal should be bright chrome. Concours Guide info and what I have on mine
2. The inside frames are gloss black on mine which I believe is correct. The guide is mute on this.
3. Yep, both sides.

I agree the outside trim is chromed but the inside frame is a medium gray color like the hood frame on the 100-4.

Do you have any documentation to confirm the gray? My frames (reproduction ones) came painted black but I have no information about what's correct. If you can offer some evidence then it'll be worthwhile disassembling them and re-painting them.

Gray does make sense as it would match the hood frame, as you say.

That was quite a find, with the original pouch and all!
I recently wrote an article for our local AH club magazine about 100 sidescreens. According to most literature there are only three types of sidescreens found on this model but I reckon there are five types.
The ones that Simon has are what I call Type three. My car has Type 2, almost exactly the same except mine do not have the window in the flap. Type 1 is the rigid perspex type found on the '53 cars, and Type 5 is the BN2 type.
I recently came across Type 4. These are similar to the Type 2 & 3 but the flap is longer and extends all the way to a point at the front and don't have the vertical element in the frame forming the small triangle at the front of the flap.
The windows are larger with less Everflex material surrounding them but are still different from the BN2 sidescreen in that the flap is still a separate attachment, whereas the BN2 type is made with one piece of "Vibac" clear plastic and barely any Everflex.
I should have included a photo but I can't locate one at the moment, sorry.
As I stated in my article, the 100 sidescreen would be the most rarely seen accessory on this model, especially in our warm Australian climate.
Cheers,
Alwyn

I found them on Craigslist sold by a long time Healey owner who doesn't have a 100 and had these on the shelf for years. I was very excited to find them. The screens on my 100 had been horribly "upgraded" in the past with pop riveted vinyl.

Alwyn, two things. Is your article available on-line or in a PDF? I would love to read it. If type 1 is from 53. Type 5 is from 55 any feel for where types 2,3 and 4 fell? My car is a late October 54 build date, so it would be nice if the type 3 was appropriate.

In my experience, the most rarely seen accessory on this model (well, BN2 anyway) is the oiler adapter for the Tecalemit grease gun. I've seen one (on Ebay) in 34 years.

I looked at mine and I looked the ones Randy Hicks had restored for his factory 100m done by Tom Kavacs. They were both medium gray. I read it on page 48 of the Austin Healey Restoration Guide written by Roger Moment and Gary Anderson. It says, "metal frame painted a light smoke gray". This is written on page 48 under the title side windows.

Thanks for the reference. I hadn't noticed that.

Out comes the Rustoleum Gloss Smoke Gray enamel. Great match for the original color on the hood frame.

Bill, thanks for the tip on the color match. I need to dig out my hood frame and look at it. I could have sworn it is black, but it has been 20 years since I looked at it.

I just found a set of Type 3 A/H100/4 side curtains. Going to post them on Ebayfor sale. Anyone wants a set, contact me ASAP before I list them.

These are Type 3 I think. I let my wife post these on ebay. We'll see what happens.

G'day Marvin,
They are what I call "Type 3". Exactly like mine except those have the window in the flap.
