100-6 Gas tank mounting straps

So, OK... I may be a bit anal, but.... I am re-installing the gas tank in the BN4. The two hold down straps seem to have had, at one time, a strip of rubber riveted to them. I have looked in every reference book I have and parts catalogs and have found nothing to indicate a rubber strip. I have an extra set of rubber strips for an MGA tank that I could put between the strap and the tank. Anyone have a suggestion?

Ron,

Here's the link to the gas tank straps thread.

I ended up using some 1/16" inch thick dark grey gasket paper that I had on hand which was purchased at Pep Boys (ROL Gaskets, Rubberized Fiber, 10" x 26" x 1/16") I doubled up the thickness by contact cementing two pieces together and then cutting it down to the final size. It bonded so well you can't see that it is two layers. The edges were sprayed black when painting the strap assembly. When I installed the tank paid close attention to the height of the tank relative to the straps. Additional foam gasket materials was required around the boot floor opening to raise the tank enough so the straps were tight and the fuel outlet lined up with the hole in the bulkhead. I also added a foam strip to the rear bottom of the tank to keep it close to level and maintain strap tightness.

Cheers,
John

Thanks one and all. John, I checked out the link that you provided and found it to be a wealth of information. I think that I am going to try to use the MGA tank strap rubber that I mentioned and let you know if thais works or not... AND if it doesn't work, my neighbor has a couple of BIG dogs that have leather collars...... Ron...
