Positive ground. With key on test light shows juice at - post on coil. When starter turns engine over shouldn't there be juice on + side?

Yes, then no, then yes, then no. If and when the points are open you will see power on the opposite side of the coil. When the points close the coil gets grounded on that terminal and that is what triggers the high voltage to fire the plug. Then the cycle repeats.

Give us more details on the "not starting" condition and we'll help. You need only three things: spark (at approx. the right time), fuel and compression. Which don't you have?

Spark - pull a plug, re-attach the lead. Hold the threaded portion against a good piece of metal grounded to the car (like a bare spot on the engine) and crank the engine with the button on the back of the solenoid with the ignition switch on. Hold the plug with a thick glove so you don't get shocked. Got spark?

Fuel - Smell the plug before you do the above test. Smell gas?

Compression - Put your thumb over the spark plug hole and crank. Got compression?

Two things were going on. 1) The float valves were being dicey. (One bowl was bone dry, the other leaked) Cleaned those, now have fuel to both and the leak has gone away.(Too much pressure for just the one? Or just a dirty valve?) The car sat for 31 years. (Those four little rug rats took most of my time and all of my money). 2) I've bypassed the master electrical shut off in the trunk and my wire to the coil was shorting the circuit, so no juice. Started the car this a.m. What a great feeling. Now I'll do the wheels and replace the 35 year old rubber. Maybe I'll even beat the weather for a short drive or two. What tires do I want/need? P.S. Thanks for helpful answers, as always. R

Walmart has 165/80 R 15 Nexems for less than $60. each. Go to their website, and they will be shipped to a store near you that has an auto dept.. Several guys running them with good results.

Whom do I trust to know what they are doing when mounting tires on spoke rims? What do I ask them? What do I tell them? BR, I appreciate your suggestion but Walmart? Did they mount them or did you just buy through them? R

Just cash and carry at Walmart. Mounted them myself with new tubes and had them balanced at a local tire shop.
You could get a local shop to do everything, including the Nexems. Lots of options - Vredesteins are great, but twice the price. Jegs and Summit catalogs sell 165/15 tires to use on the fronts of race cars. If you can't find tubes locally, eBay lists a lot for $10. Each. If money is no object, and new wheels are in order, go to Hendrix wire wheel and get a package.
Good luck, Bob

Seems as though I've heard negative things about using tubes with radial tires. Anyone have any info on that?

I believe you are supposed to use a special tube for radials, or at least that is what I remember my local tire shop telling me, "radial tubes"
