Dismantling the dash for the purpose of repainting.In order to remove the water temp guage,do I take the wire wrapped sensor tube loose at the radiator and thread it backwards through the hole in the dash or do I loosen the two screws on the barrel of the guage and pull the connection loose there? I don't want to cause myself complications by undoing the guage connection that maybe isn't meant to come apart.

Take it loose from the radiator__it's the only way.

Depending on the condition of the rubber grommet in the firewall, you may have to remove the grommet along with the sensor tube. If the grommet is mostly rotted away, you may be able to pull the head of the sensor through it (carefully). Otherwise, pull the grommet out with the tube As Randy said, be really careful, the gauge and tube will have to be sent off for repair if you break it.
