Back during the days of the Soviet Union, it took 10 years to get a car after you paid for one.
Once, a young guy went to the car dealership to order a car. He paid the money, and the asked when can he come and get the car.
"It will be here, waiting for you, exactly 10 years from today".
The man signed the papers, started waliking away and then stooped, turned and asked the salesman: "Wait, will it be ready at the morning or at the afternnon".
"What difference does it make?", asked the salesman.
"Well", answered the man, "the plumber is coming in the morning".

And the Tribant was SOOOOOOO worth the wait.. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devilgrin.gif
I'd hate to see the Warranty policy they had. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif

You would have been lucky to get the Trabant, German engineering and all. In the heart of the Soviet Union you most likely would have settled on a Moskovitch or Lada or Volga. All fine examples of Soviet central committee production planning and quotas. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/jester.gif

There were many great features of the Trabi... The suspension makes as much noise as the engine. Literally you could turn off the motor, and the car would still make "2-stroke" noises, bouncing down the cobblestone streets of GDR.

(My father is of East German anscestry, and we visited when we could as a kid. Two of my uncles had Trabis, the third a Lada. The Lada, a four stroke motor, was a positive luxury.)

Joke:
Q: Why does the Trabi have a rear defroster?
A: To keep the hands warm of those pushing it!

(My one uncle's car had to be push started each time... starter motor was out, parts were not available.)
