.002 out-of-round crank build going strong

Well, my redneck rebuilt 1500 with the rod journals .002 out of round is doing ALLOT better than I thought it would. I have about 1500 miles on it right now; no noise or anything weird. Car runs great. I'm really suprised. I didn't have the resources to build it right, so I just freshened it up. Half way through I realized I really should build it right, but I already had STD bearings I couldn't return and would be out the $$$ anyway, so I might as well give it a shot.

The crank was UGLY !!! I think Hap would passed out if he had seen how this thing was before I put it back together knowing I was using it as-is. One rod journal looked like it was machined for two different offset journals. I polished it up and mic'd it. .002 out of round and about .0025-.003 clearance (plastigage). Doesn't knock anymore on start up like it has for the past seven years.

It'll do for now till I find a core motor to build. The main focus on my car is keeping it on the road. I'm not at a point to do a full restoration. Being drivable is just fine with me for the time being.

Now...I'm not sayin' it's right, I'm sayin' IT'S RUNNIN' !!!

It's back on the road and I'm happy !!! (so is she)

I had to stay in front of a gravel truck for 15 minutes at 5000 rpm and she held, I was suprised. I know she won't take allot of that.

Ev'ry time ya go out you're in High Pucker Country, Billy. :jester:

Re: .002 out-of-round crank build going strong

5000 rpm???

With all that extra bearing clearance, you ought to be able to get an extra 1000 rpm, easy! :driving:

Re: .002 out-of-round crank build going strong

How's the oil pressure?

particularly in front of a gravel truck at 5k rpm.

Don't forget the people who built these cars. As I took Ms Triss apart I swear they measured tolerances with a ruler. (or a cigarette package)I'm increasingly convinced that except for racing good enough is usually good enough when it comes to these cars. I know mine is far better than factory.

Re: .002 out-of-round crank build going strong

We had a customer come in the shop with low oil pressure. Long story short, had to pull the pan and found, on one of the rod journals, a length of leather belt being used as a substitute for 1/2 of the rod journal bearing. Was that way when he bought it and he had been driving it for more than a year. Journal mic'd in tolerance so we installed a new bearing, just the one as he instructed, and sent him on down the road.

I heard that's how they did it back in the day. Woulda tried it, but not on this car.

Jus' got th' light. I'm afraid to know th' truth, I might stop drivin' it. (everyone asks me that). The light's not commin' on at a hot idle, and Lord knows many a VW....shoot, I've got one now. 165K and the case has never been split. ( Mom's car since new) And it don't flicker at ya, it ~SHINES~!

Jim, the real question is, was is tri-leather ?

Re: .002 out-of-round crank build going strong

Well, now at 2693 since rebuild and doing great. The bad thing, I figured I was only going to do 2500 for this year and did over that in 3 months.

Now I hope I can get 10K out of this rebuild. That should be about two years driving. I think it'll go that long. Still not rattling on start up. I'm really suprised about that. Who knows, once it starts making noise, I might get another seven years out of it like last time.

YES!

Now that's the winning attitude! DRIVE!

Re: .002 out-of-round crank build going strong

~EVERY~ chance I get! I would have to guess that I am in the top of the yearly driver miles catagory for an LBC.

Maybe we should have a competiton or thread dedicated to this? Give out a cheap trophy that goes from winner to winner each year. Whadda y'all think?
