Before there was eBay, there was (and still is) Hemmings, which is where I found my Healey. The car was located on the opposite coast so I flew out there to see it, and yes, I made a mini vacation out of it. That was after checking out more than 10 other Healeys, all of which required travel to inspect. Most of these cars turned out to be misrepresented by their sellers, which caused me anguish and frustration, but at least I still had my money (minus airfare and lost time). Over time, I got pretty good at asking the right questions and decoding the answers before booking a flight, my favorite: Q “Is there any rust”? A: “None that I am aware of”. Ha! I never went the auction route, but I think if I were in the market for a collector car now, I might consider this option for the reasons stated by Reid and others.
