TR4/4A Easier Starter R&R?

Since I have my engine and transmission out for refurbishing, I’ve been thinking about improvements that can easily be made now. Getting the starter in and out has always been a pain, and I’ve heard of some people using a Helicoil or Nutcert to make threads in the bell housing to eliminate the nut needed to mount the starter. Anyone done something like this, and is it worthwhile? Figured now would be the time if it is.

I remember reading about people doing this some years ago, but since I have a modern type starter, I haven’t had to deal with it for quite awhile. Thought I remembered it being a real pain, but that could have been with the original type starter. Sounds like this is not a popular modification so probably not worth the effort.

Great to hear from someone who did it, and was happy with the results. Certainly simple to do now…can’t think of a downside.
