Some part of being male seems to draw many to what is sometimes called "complication"--hence the attraction to the analog vs the digital, more gauges vs less (such as some choosing to have both an ammeter and a voltmeter), etc.
I have a fuel/air gauge I took off one of my race cars which has a really neat LED/digital display that would tell me on a constant basis how close I was to the ideal mixture. I also have a vintage Heuer Monte Carlo 12 hour clock /stopwatch combo that would let me or a non-existant navigator know exactly how close we were to arriving at the next non-existant checkpoint on time
I think the dash of a 100, being an elegant copy of the car's profile, looks best when kept simple. The central console of the later cars invites drilling more holes and hanging more thingies. In the end the car belongs to its owner who is free to decorate/desecrate it as seen fit.
I have had a voltmeter AND an ammeter on my BJ8 for almost 20 years. It is nice knowing the charge/discharge at any moment. The voltmeter never changes. It warned me of nothing last year when the 4-year-old battery suddenly died after a 4-month winter snooze even with a float charger. The ammeter MUST have an in-line fuse to protect things and a well-insulated access port in the firewall (as guided by Norman Nock). Both give valuable information. It's like wearing a belt and suspenders.
I have a period two-drop gauge holder suspended below the wooden dash. (I have a matching single one on the passenger side to hold an analog clock.)
I added a voltmeter with a bottom reading visual scale to make it easier reading due to dash interference. I also added a Clock between the Speedo andcTach making it easy to read. The clock still runs with the Master Switch off due to a separate wire to it from the battery.
As I said in an earlier post there seems to be something about an appearance of complexity that appeals to our masculinity.
Your supplementary panel is nicely done, quite funny and even gives me a little Woodie!
Seriously, I'd like to see a wider shot showing how you integrated that into the dash.
I have shrunk to about 5 foot 9 inches over the years. Perfect for a Healey. But seriously, I never did have a problem in the last 18+years since I installed them and was over 5 foot 10 inches and a half. There is about 3 inches of vertical clearance, and they are off to my right so, no interference.
I have a selection of knobs to change out. One is an ejector seat.
I used a very simple house thermostat wire for the clock. It has two very small wires in a protective vinyl cover. I installed it along my main wire harness with zip ties. Also,I put a inline fuse of 3-5 amps for protection. If you try to start tge car, with tge Battery Shut-off switch off, it will blow the fuse.
