TR6 5 speed conversion

The w58 that I installed in my TR6 fit with no modifications to the gear shift. It was literally “plug and play”. It is a wonderful upgrade to driving my car.

That was apparently the HVDA conversion. The inventor was Herman van den Aker. Great guy. I have put that conversion in 3 cars. Love them.

You are right…. Herman was quite a guy. Whenever I called him for assistance during the install of his kit he always gave me as much time as I needed. He was a great guy!

Yes. The rear of the toyota tranny is a slip in fit. So with that, one needs to stabilize the length of the TR driveshaft. What you are doing is swapping the TR self adjusting driveshaft for the self adjusting on the Toyota tranny.

Understood. I was just wondering if you cut your driveshaft to length and eliminated the locking ring.
 
When I did my conversion I had a new driveshaft made by a local shop, using the TR yoke at one end and a Toyota slip yoke at the other end. And of course it was all balanced as a unit. Attached are some pics showing the W58 in place and the new driveshaft.

Thanks for posting those pics. I did my conversion about 6-7 years ago. I always worry about the locking ring loosening allowing the driveshaft to move.
I’m going to check/tighten the locking ring before I get it on the road this season.
 
Is it worth it??
I dropped in the Miata 5-speed with Vitesse adaptor into my 1972 TR6 and I am absolutely thrilled. It performs beautifully and I now cruise comfortably at 110 km an hour, at 2200 RPMs. There is just a slight resonance sound in fifth gear, but it’s quite minor and the benefits of the fifth gear are amazing. It is a dent in the wallet, but I am thrilled with the investment
 
My TR6 came with a 5 speed conversion. The prior owner had it done at a shop and said they got the kit from Moss and used a Toyota tranny. I was thinking of changing out the fluid, what kind of oil does it take? 80w90, 10w30 or something else?

I used Redline MT 90 in my Toyota transmission.
 
I have been running the Toyota conversions in 2 TR4's now for 10+ years. I use Valvoline, GL-5, limited slip, 75-90 or 80-90, Brand is not important the GL-5 is what you need to look for. With what it cost me for Red Line to use in the overdrive tranny I will stick with the available brands at local stores.
