TR6 72 TR6 starter problem

Lately having problems with my car starting. I thought it was the battery so I had it replaced. Still didn't start. Was told to gently tap the starter and then the car started. Does this mean I need a new starter? Thank you!!

You don't want to be having to do that everytime you want to go for a drive...I'd take the starter off and have it checked at a Starter and Alternator shop....if there's one in your vicinity....Maybe it's just the solenoid, but if it's the starter motor gone bad, I'd suggest getting a new one vs repair or rebuilding that one.

Starters on TR6's get really hot next to EX pipes. It is a brush motor with oil light bearings. and may drag. It could also have a bad com bar. What age is the starter?? The shop could charge as much as $ 150.00 dollars so OEM starters are not out there so a new geared starter is the best fix. I just did that last year and very happy

Doug is right on! I worked as an Elevator repairman for 40 years and did just that many times on old units. copper wears down mica does not. repairing the starter may be something for you to try if you have the knowledge or time to play with it. Or just get a new one. Option two have wife push start you. Kidding but I have had to do that a time or two. Still married after 50 years.

Thank you everyone for your comments. Unfortunately, I don't have the knowledge - wish I did. Hopefully I can find a good mechanic in the Bellingham area that knows how to work on Triumphs and get a new starter.

You won't need a TRiumph guy to remove and replace that starter.

Call this guy he is well known and may recommend in your area
Ray Marty 503-357-5640 Say Andy sent you. I will be meet him Thursday down South so tomorrow or next week. You will not get a new OEM but the geared one works well.
