Healey Blue Paint - suggestions

No I'm not going to ask what is the paint code for Healey Blue!

My car is being sprayed after the crash. They are having trouble matching the paint which was not a straight forward Healey Blue. They made a bit of a screw up so I may be able to get the whole car done for almost the same price.

I'm fed up of trying to match these old Healey Blues. Has anybody used a colour direct from a modern car manufacturer that is close to Healey Blue. It would be so much simpler if it was painted a colour for which it would be easy to buy touch up paint. I know very modern colours can have too much flake but I had a Healey that was painted a Peugeot colour and it looked great. Problem is I can't remember which one!

G'day Derek,
I used a modern colour when I restored my 100. It is from a Mitsubishi Magna, 2002 model. The colour is called Island Blue and the code was "YC".
Cheers,
Alwyn

Derek,

Maybe Jaguar Opalescent Silver Blue would work?

I have a BC/CC code for Healey Blue in PPG Deltron, should you wish.

Many high end refinishing stores can scan your paint and get you the "closest" modern match. If I were you that's what I would consider. You could always then swap to a smaller metallic size to get closer to replicating the original look.

Derek,

1979 Ford Thunderbird. These are all the same paint.

Because of the fine metallic in the Healey blue you will be hard pressed to get a match. Even the same can of paint shot on a different day may not work. Air pressure. temp all have an effect on how the paint lays down. It will just look different.

Chrysler Butane Blue is very close. Paint code is PBE. It was used on about a billion minivans in the mid-2000s so you can probably see one in the flesh if you go to your local wal-mart or grocery store!

By now every color that has been invented has been used.

You get 10 different Healey Blue color cars next to each other and all will have a different shade.

I went through my bodyshop painters book and picked out what I thought to be close but yet a color that was a on a more modern car. They use Sikkens Autobase Plus MM.

The color came from a 1989 Volkswagen

color code: 89,L96M,X2

Akzo Code: VWL96M

color Map 334A3

Revision Date 12/13/2004

I later found that it is called a Marathon Blue

Nice looking colour and car. Thanks for all the suggestions. As I live in the UK I don't think I can access some of them. Jaguar obviously I can. Sikkens maybe. I am off to check the spray cans at my local parts store then off for a chat with the painter. I have some actual (supposedly) Healey Blue formula that they mixed the last time in error. I'd like to see a sample of that sprayed on some metal.

Part of the problem is that we all have our own favourite Healey Blue, some prefer more steely blue, others more silvery, others with a slightly warmer tinge. Difficult to decide!

Hi Derek
I hope this can help

[h=2]Re: Healey Blue[/h]
I contacted the folks at PPG around Healey Blue. The frist post is my question and the second is the answer I received.

I understand that in 1999 PPG acquired ICI paint business. I am looking
for the modern day equivelent of ICI color 2301M or BU2. The color was
known as Ice Blue Metallic. It was used on my 1965 Austin Healey 3000. I
was wondering if you have a cross reference chart. I could not locate one
on your website

Anthony,
Thank you for your interest in Nexa Autocolor. The old ICI Autocolor number is still accurate; there is no cross reference required for this reference number. Since the acquisition of ICI; both PPG and Autocolor have mnaintained unique brand reference codes. (2301M has not changed in any form )
Thank you for your inquiry,
RCL

In the Corvette concours world, restorers go through significant effort to match paint so that it exactly mimics the factory color. That's the standard we judge to, and anything else will then result in some level of deduction.
When I'm out judging no are favorites allowed, so to speak.

Of course, for non-judged cars or personal preference then anything is allowed.

Well:
It sure was a critical color:
Healey made sure that multiple cars shipped to one dealer all came from the same batch as they could not control the final color from batch to batch.
A good example of this is to just look at the cover of Healey Marque for Oct 2015 and you will see all those car blues are different but they all Healey Blue.---:highly_amused:.

I used the original BU02 paint code in R-M paint. It came out a little too much silver, not that close to "Healey Blue".

An old timer once told me "if you paint a car in Healey blue, don"t park it next to another Healey blue car because that owner will swear that their car is spot on Healey Blue.

Good luck!

Well the paintshop called and said they'd found a good match to what the car was. I went round to see it and I agreed it looked good. They said they'd paint the whole car for only ÂŁ200 more which was very good of them. So I told them to go ahead and I'd have my fingers crossed.

Picked up the car today and drove it back without windscreen, lights or number plates! Not many cops out in the country.

I really like it.

It is:

Fiat Azzurro Polar (Italian for polar blue which is pretty close to Ice Blue!)
Colour code 248/A
Shade BN 0220A

Photo taken with an iPhone in poor light. Looking forward to seeing it in the sun.
