I-40 Closing in NM

Due to an accident with a fatality between a passenger vehicle and an 18 wheeler, the interstate was closed from about 7:00 this morning until long after noon. Nit sure when it was reopened. All traffic was at a total stop on the interstate and Route 66 was the only way into Albuquerque. It really made me appreciate the interstate. What should have been 15 minutes took me 1.5 hours and caused a lot of burps in my morning schedule. So Boss how long was your morning commute?

Im not complaining but posting to say I never really thought much about getting into town until today. Won't be taking it for granted for some time.

Actually, I took a day of leave and Mary and I went to Bosque Del Apache (Via Estancia and Mountain Air) so we avoided I-40, but could see it backed up for miles!

I remember traveling as a family back in the 1950s - before the great Interstate Highway project got underway.

You had to drive through downtown in nearly every city. During the summers, miles of cars crawled along "Main Street".

Thank you President Eisenhower!

I remember my parents telling me that was how cities got money to maintain their main streets. In Sacramento, the highway wound around so many of the city streets.

I remember back in 2009 I picked up I 40 from I 26 in NC heading west just after a rock slide shut the highway down, we had to make a 140 mile detore to get back on 40. Had I listened to the news the day before I would have avoided the mess and took another route. From that episode, I check highway conditions before I travel anymore. PJ

These situations make my Mom's visiting all 48 states before 1935 via road trips with her parents seem impossible to me. To have the patience for the long drives at slow paces without AC seems beyond my endurance.

This is one of my Grandpa's photos from the Badlands during one of their 5708 mile trip in 1934.

Dave, that is a great photo. That would have been quite the adventure back before paved roads.

Judy, you probably already heard / read that the person killed was a Junior at Manzano High in Albuquerque. Very sad.

I did and so sad. Apparently he drove right onto the back of a semi and got caught there. Hate to say it but was probably texting and not paying attention. Still very sad for those he left behind.

great pic! Interesting. and, have been behind those accidents too. And remember (and appreciate) the stories of the creation of the Interstate system. At the same time we gave something up to get there quicker. Particularly poignant since virtually none of our LBC's were designed for interstates.
