Tom, you have excellent taste sir. I would second this option but advise getting a standard, I've never been much of a fan of Mercedes autos, plus standards are more fun.

Don, the whole point of this is to help Gary find something that is not totally controlled by computers, something he can work on if he feels like it but he can drive daily. Heck, for the most reliable transport he should just ride the bus, then he never need worry about maintaining anything.

But that's my point, with today's cars you don't have to work on them cept brakes , fluids and that like.
And none of that has anything to do with computers.
I don't remember the last time I had a car problem that wasn't akin to a maintenance issue as I posed.

They just don't break down,...less you get a Chrysler or sumptin
 
Don, Cars should be beautiful, poetic, loud, and sometimes even clunkers, this is what gives them soul. Modern cars lack soul they are computer controlled boring transportation boxes. To me a brand new Ferrari is just about as interesting as a new Nissan. I think Gary is trying to get away from this lack of soul.

Some cars should be beautiful, poetic, loud and sometimes even clunkers. Others just need to get me from point A to point B with a minimum of trouble, capital and gas and a maximum of comfort and quiet. I know that is heresy to some, but as someone who lives in my car for work, I don't maintain it myself, I don't want to modify, tune, restore, repair it, I just want it to work. BUT when I get home from work I can pour my love into Ms Triss.

Everything has its place in the chain - even souless cars and Smart Cars (runs and hides)
 
Amen. I leased a Subaru lLegacy. It handles better than many sports cars. So does my '02 Accord V6 - now my wife's ride. Both are stone reliable and the Accord has over 142,000 miles on it. I neither can nor want to work on either newer car. If something goes wrong on the Legacy, it's back to the dealer under warranty. That's why I have the Tr6 to fool with. I also have a good indie shop for the Accord. I love the rear-view camera on the Legacy and the blind spot warning lights on the mirrors.
 
I think it would be helpful to hear from Gary on what he plans to use the car for.

Otherwise, we're just guessing!

I have a 99 Corolla I've had from new that is utility transportation. It can sit outside in the driveway or parking lot, rain, sun, snow, cold or hot and I don't have to worry over it. Spent perhaps 3k on maintenance over the years, minus oil, gas, wiper blades and such, and have little desire to spend much time under the hood doing much. Just as soon spend it on the more fun rides in the garage.
 
We actually need to replace two cars. Both will be used for work and most likely be driven around 1,500 miles a month each. Our 2000 Chrysler Sebring has had multiple problems and now dies in the road from time to time...can't figure it out but seems to be computer related. Our 2004 Saab 9-3 has multiple erroneous problems lights all the time. I can't work on either one and can't afford the mechanics...
 
IMO, you have two of the most troublesome cars on the road. My daughter leased a Saab a few years ago. Nothing but trouble, poor dealer support and they tried to collect $1,200.00 from her at the end of the lease. I sent them $750.00. They sent a couple of threatening letters and that was that. According to CU, the Sebring has a bad repair record as well. Don't let those cars ruin your day. There are better cars out there.
