Loud Trans Scrapping Noise

A few days ago, a old (my age) 67 BJ8 owner (since ’72) gave me a call for some advice on the transmission of his car. After a short run, it was obvious that a metal scrapping sound was coming from in, or around, the transmission but all gears shifts were smooth and precise. Additionally, the O/D performed flawlessly and, when in O/D, the scrapping noise seemed to disappear and the trans/OD would substantially quiet down.

I would appreciate any ideas and/or suggestions.

Rich/Keoke,

Thanks for the responses. Rich, something I had no thought of and very intriguing. The interesting thing about your thought is that his parking brake is also inoperable and he has had the rear hub seals and brakes recently replaced. Although, I too, was incline to have thought in the area of the clutch, as Keoke favored, I could not reconcile the fact that the scrapping sound significantly diminishes after O/D actuation? Also, if in the clutch or transmission, I would have expected some shifting difficulty or clutch actuation issues.

I had addressed some time next week to investigate getting his hand brake working and would appreciate any further thoughts.

Again thanks,
Ray (64BJ8P1)

Check that the emergency brake cable is not rubbing on the drive shaft.

I'll second this. I once hit a bump that manged to get the cable wedged between the driveshaft and frame. Scary noise that would change significantly with driveline torque load.

Consider putting the rear up in the air too where the car can be run at idle and in gear and someone can walk around, peer underneath and localize where the sound is coming from. And even perhaps see what is doing it.

Thanks for your thoughts and replies.

Agree and would always like to know what I am addressing before delving into the pursuit and correction. However, in this situation, I have an emergency that is inoperable so intend to pull the passenger seat, console, and transmission cover address what why it is not working in the first place. While the cover is off, I intend to fuse the solenoid and will follow Mike's suggestion to make sure the issue was addressed and resolved before replacing all. Since my friend is away at the moment, I expect to address this issue some time the end of the week and report back. I have owned my Healey for since new and found that there is no such thing as a 5 minute job, so who knows what will be found.

Thanks again,
Ray (64BJ8P1)

I haven't had mine as long as you, only getting it in 1978, but I agree, and have long said that there's no five (5) minute job that can be done in less than half an hour!

We're definitely on the same page there! Good luck and hope it all works out in the end.

Oh, and I have to admit I was a little concerned when reading your second (2nd) sentence: "I have an emergency that is inoperable..." Glad you were only talking about the car!!

While the cover is off, I intend to fuse the solenoid

OK Ray Just:
Make sure the fuse is readily accessible, is a slow blow type and does not exceed 10 Amps.
