Windows 7 back-to-back up-dates?

I am a Mac user but I do have Windows 7 installed which I access under Parallels 9. This morning, when I shut down Windows I got the message "Please do not power off or unplug your machine. installing update X of 62"

When it finally finished, the computer rebooted and I stared Windows again with no problem. But, when I shut down Windows again, I got the same message again, but this time it was installing 24 updates. Is it normal for the Windows 7 OS to install back-to-back updates? The only thing I can think of is the second set required the first set to be installed first, but I've never had this happen before that I recall.

It happens - thankfully not every day but about every 3 weeks, it seems. Also common if you haven't updated in a while. In some cases it's clear that update set #1 needed to be installed before #2 could be, in others I suspect it's just packaging.

Lately, we get an update every day for "Windows Defender", which we never use.

Another possibility - you're seeing the gradual installation of Windows 10 upgrade. Do you have a small monochrome "windows" logo on the right side of the Windows 7 task bar?

On the other hand - how often do you run Win7 on your Mac? If not often, it may just be all the accumulated o/s and security updates since the last time you ran it. On my rarely used upstairs Win7 desktop, about once every two months there's a slew of security updates which require a restart - and the restart immediately begins installation of even more updates.

"One day the system will be so secure, nothing will go in OR out."

Must be the second thing. Just piled up security updates.

I got my new box loaded with XP-64, then finally got it to talk to MicroSlime. Problem is, MicroSlime has changed the contact procedure and software for updates since this disc was made.

Got SP2 (newest for 64 bit) installed in about 20 minutes...had to turn Auto Updates on for the privilege thereof, then it said auto updates set for 0300 daily....and it was about 1900 local...but, turned around and it wanted to install about 140 updates.
I went through the whole list, declined some (like, just to be different, I kept IE6), so 136 downloaded.

I will say, this box is FAST. And easy access.
I had to yank the video card to get make and model for drivers, no tools requires, shove the catch, side falls off, safety interlock kills power, hold release levers together, flip over hinged retainer, lift video card out.

Oh...and got all done, turn updates off hard.

Just curious, Dave; what vid card? ATI or nvidia? With CEntOS I've been very pleased with nvidia, they have stellar support on their site for us "L-word" folk. Likely not as big an issue with XP though.

Yup. Resissssstance is futile. :smirk:

nvidia. P383, 285 series. Had to pull it to find out.
Minor tweaking to get the shape of the display right. A 24" wide screen is an issue it seems. No problem with 32 bit XP and imbedded mother board driver, which is what I am on right now, the 64 bit is a little stretched...but nvidia has a lot of tweaks available.

Sometimes, when I go to shut down Windows, I get "Installing 1 of 73 updates" and can't turn off the machine until it finishes - which can take some time. Arggg!

I used to get that in the old days from time to time.
Pull the plug or batteries or both, and you CAN turn it off!
