For a loft, have a 4X4 trap and put an electric hoist on reinforced trusses and lift parts up. Just make sure loft floor is set for weight.

Right idea but perhaps overkill for me. Mine will be used only for the stuff that won't easily go up the pull down stairs. We called the lift device a rope falls, probably incorrectly. Here's one similar from Granger.

The one we had was only 3 part, I think. Totally adequate. Anything it wouldn't handle probably shouldn't be up there. I do realize that the proliferation of light stuff does become heavy at some point so I plan not to overdo.

When moving things up (or down), I find that it's not so much the weight of the part as just not having enough hands to both maneuver the part around and hold on to the rail at the same time.

But I did manage to way overload my loft. Someday I'm going to have to take it all back down and rebuild, plus find somewhere else for the transmissions and wheels.
 
Don't think I'd put a lot of faith in a block and tackle at that price. I sure wouldn't stand under it.
 
Were going to put up another building just for the tractors and other equipment where they can have year around protection from the weather. Probably 30X40, not sure yet if it'll be big enough, but I think so. That way I can partition the 40X60 building for more uses. PJ
 
I was going to do the same type deal in a future shop project using a harbor freight electric wench attached to reinforced framing. Store everything in the attic from big tools(welders etc) to spare parts. Would free up tons of space... Sorta like www.versalift.com but way way cheaper home made and the same type concept
