TR6 16y.o. First car- Triumph TR-6 Advice???

Looks like a '74? For electrical issues, disassembling and cleaning the fuse box brought a lot of lights and gauges back. Always check your grounds. 2 things on these TR6s: Rear differential problems, and thrust washer wear.

When I first got my TR3 over 10 years ago, i just read through old posts on BCF. Since I didn't know what I didn't know, the post were very instructive to me.

Your kid will have a blast with that 6!
 
Jonesboro, thanks for the response, not where I thought. Certain elements of the picture reminded me of a place in southwest Cobb along Austell Rd but can't quite remember where along that road. I don't get out that way much these days and after a while all these different places start to look rather similar.
 
Great first car (my TR4A was my real first one when I was 18) and great father-son project.

That is a great shop and I'm with you, no power??

Well got a call this afternoon from the body shop...once they got it up on the frame rack, they didnt feel comfortable that pulling it back would be enough due to the age and the thin ness of the metal of the frame... he suggested I take it to another guy who does some restoration work to maybe section out part of the frame that is krinkled and stiffen it dueto a couple small cracks on the inside of the frame we couldnt see before it went on the rack...

I am getting skeered and now know why I was able to *STEAL IT!!!*
 
Nothing personal , just my honest opinion, throw your cards in now. The frame should be replaced and the car just isn't worth doing that to.

No, this one would be worth it... the deciding factor is if it really needs a new frame? If so, then it should be a great "frame off "restoration project... unfortunately, not exactly what a 16y.o. wants to do... He wanted to do more of a driving restification... While I don't know british cars, I do know about older cars and trucks... Even worked in a Large salvage yard and have a pretty good idea of what can and cant be done... But I am trying to avoid a frame off...

Why do I believe this one is worth saving?

-The minimal rust in the tub (no holes), wheel wells, solid rockers, floorboards, and pans
-The original redline tire in the trunk indicates the use this one has seen
-Minus one taillight and turn signals all other electronics work all gauges work it runs and drives well,
-Synchros seem good for a 41 yo sports car!
-Compared to most restos I see on youtube and blogs, this thing is actually very solid.
-Compared to a 65 Mustang coupe I did years ago, this one is cherry! And that one only needed rear quarters and a couple small pieces in the rear pan...

First, I'll see what the guy with fabrication skills can or is willing to do... Then, I have to decide if it is something we want to do... (Just because some shop can't do it, doesn't mean it can't be done easily...as most body shops are collision centers.. I was shocked that the one I took it to, only had a MM140 for a welder... But the industry has shifted to doing quick insurance repairs. It would be something I could do, *IF* I had the bare frame on jack stands...)
 
Well no hard feelings then. Just one more opinion to consider. I've owned quite a few of them. I'd start with a nicer one.

So I saw your poll indicating frame issues first and I was afraid it was the typical rust issue where the rear trailing arms attach. So this is just damage in the front suspension area? As long as there's not a rust issue in the rear, I think it should be worth saving but definitely take it to some place that is more familiar with Triumphs to get an opinion and cost.

No hard feelings at all... I have no emotional attachment to this car...My son on the other hand!!!

So I have the line on a shop that can do the work, but must see just what they say next week... if they can fix it reasonably.. we're in business.. If not, I have a dillema

It is really a section of frame rail aft fromthe A-Arm to the upper support... that twisted and opened upon the back side at the top from an accident, but the front apron under the bumper and even the bumpers are very straight!!! I think it was maybe more like a hard landing or something that went under the car YEARS ago!!! If I could section out 12 inches from behind the A-Arm, and get a solid replacement it would be more doable...

Rear looked really pretty good on the rack... But am thinking that maybe this is a project for someone looking to do a frame off...
Lots of really good parts.. but with the only rust holes being in the rear trunk lid from a leaking luggage rack...
I'd love to see what the people with much more experience than myself think...

I'll bet they know better who is working on Triumphs in the area than we do (or at least better than I do).

Also, not to belabor the point, you really want a frame shop to work on the frame, not necessarily a Triumph shop.
