clever. just got to clean a frozen drain - when does the bus leave?

so, now when does the bus leave - really! Pipes burst in the cold. Here is how I spent my day.

still not fixed - ugh

What a mess - and this is happening all over New England too. Have patience, and don't try thawing with an open torch.

(Say ... look under that shelf on the left ... aren't those some old chrome door handles?)

11 degrees here in North Eastern Oklahoma this morning! Last week it hit 70!

It's a true sign of GW (Global Weather) !!

Worked one year when I was young with a guy who tried that, but he stuck the torch in a hole in the wall and walked off and left it to go to work. There was a message for him when he arrived that the house was on fire...

I knew I forgot something...

Well, got the pipes all repaired today (had to put the tenants in a hotel last night - they're students so I think they were happy) put heating wires on all the pipes and wrapped insulation - supposed to be good to -40. we will see. I am nervous, but it should work (famous last words I know) 8 green garbage bags of sodden drywall and insulation - sheesh. On the bright side we went to the Toronto Aquarium tonight - stunning!

Nasty business, JP. Can't imagine repairing that kind of failure in the weather you're getting.

Watch out Doc! The nasties are headed your way.

We had about 14" of snow on Monday. Today it's blowing drifts everywhere and supposed to go to -13°F tonight...in Edmonson County Kentucky !!! This is not good. Schools are closed for the week.

Gary - what are you doing to keep your house's pipes from freezing?

Tom

Tom...letting the water drip at night. It almost didn't work last night. Got up this morning and nothing was dripping...water burped and gurgled then started running. Glad Carla got up at 4:30 !! And it WAS -13° !!

Thanks Doc - and you're right. Though at least it was inside. I have a little heater that actually makes a difference and, we had the doors open to the garage. That said, I bought a MAPP torch because I couldn't get the pipes hot enough with propane. Though, leaving the propane torch inside and a bit of a warm up meant I didn't need the hotter torch.

The real issue is the awkwardness of it all - the apartment is an addition, the pipes squirrel through little openings and were insulated by newspaper (BTW - did I mention we unrolled one newspaper and the first thing we saw was an ad for the company my father in law worked for when he immigrated!) Interestingly, the house was originally heated by radiators. the water pipes were wrapped together with the old rad pipes - so, in many ways the new technology caused a problem that hadn't existed until then.

two nights good so far - knock wood

Well, -22C and the pipes are holding! Had to replace two of the heating wires yesterday - one didn't work and the other seemed to stop every time you touch it. The advantage is a neater installation, and, much like my car, each time I do it, it gets quicker.

But, your life is never so bad that someone's isn't worse. We have discussed extensively the record snowfalls along the eastern seaboard, but, I am not sure how many are aware of the snow in Maritime Canada? I believe it was Moncton NB they were referring to when the said on the news yesterday that a normal winter sees 2700 truckloads of snow removed and thus far this winter they have moved 18000.

amazing

We've seen the first freeze in four years here. I'm gonna lose some yard plants but that's about it. I feel for y'all "up there" bein' subject to constant below freezing temps. The excess snow is insult to injury.
