Can the F-Type save Jaguar?

As as terrific as it is, the F-Type can't save Jaguar.

Sport coupes and spyders are wonderful. But they're too much of a niche product, especially in Jaguar's market segment. They can't keep a company afloat by themselves.

A product like the F-Type can be profitable, just not enough to maintain the company. And it can be a halo product to keep Jaguar on customers' radar. But to make a go of a whole company you need bread and butter products that sell in volume.

Caymens and Boxters are great. But the didn't save Porsche's bacon. The Cayenne did.

Toyota has its Camry, Ford its F-series, BMW its 3-series. Even in its darkest (independent) days, Chrysler kept its doors open thanks to minivans.

Hopefully, the upcoming XE will be the hit that the X-Type wasn't. The F proves that Jag has the performance and styling chops. If they can deliver some of that excitement in a bread and butter product they may well have a winner.
