As the mighty Grumman Widgeon comes in for one last time ... I'm seeking advice on whether to get another old car. Most know my clutch leg is a big dodgy (among other parts ...), and I've had to sell my wonderful ol' Mercedes and TR.

So - please cast your vote in Today's Poll!

Thanks.
Tom

I don't see a choice for automatic Miata ;)

Tom, Think you should have had another choice in this poll - "Yes. Tom should rejoin the Old Car Hobby."
Whether it's in another Triumph or in another Mercedes Benz or in another (fill in the marque), participating in the old car hobby and driving them is just too enjoyable.

If it will bring you some joy, then get another one! Doesn't matter what it is -- auto Miata sounds fun too.

Well, I see a lot of foolish choices there like buying aluminum siding or keeping the money in savings. I suppose it depends on what you have for daily drivers and how much having an "old" car means to you. The problem I see with wanting an older car with an automatic is many of those transmissions just weren't very good. You could have a lot of fun with some of the newer Jags or a Porsche Cayman S with an automatic that works pretty much like a manual without the clutch.

I agree with Mark. A Volvo 122 Auto would have the old car feel, better than a Miata. There are a lot of older auto cars, Jag, Austin, Mercedes, etc., with autos. Maybe if the auto is not as dependable as expected, then transplant a more dependable auto into the old car and still have your ideal ride.

There is some pretty decent old American cars out there, a 50s Olds Rocket 88 would be a cool car.

I'd get the car that puts the biggest grin on your face.

Despite all logic and sense ... that's usually what I end up doing.

Fool that I am.

Had a bright yellow 73 Super Beetle with a semi automatic in it and we loved that car! Went everywhere in it, even with a new Eldorado setting in the garage! Had no clutch pedal but you could shift it as it had an electric actuated clutch, or not shift it as it had a torque converter. We had more fun in that car than any we ever had after, and we've had a few. Funny, the wife and I were talking about that car last night. Wouldn't mind having it back! PJ

At least you know the answer to this question:

I agree, start the hunt for a classic automatic! There's gotta be a good selection of vintage Mercedes with autos, old money sucking Jags (but I can't resist them) the Volvos mentioned, You could even go classic American and find an old Chrysler or Desoto with the "2-in-the-goo" push button auto. Plenty of air-cooled VWs to choose from. You could get auto transmissions in Bugs, Busses, Karmen Ghias, Type 3s. I'm enjoying my Bus to no end! It's a camper, so I can go on weekend trips to fun events. I take it to shows and everyone loves it! especially the kids.(they are the only judges I care about) People smile and wave on the road. It's just a vehicle that makes people happy. Mine is a stick, but I know some auto owners and they like the performance of the automatic just fine.
Now..... For a british car.... Maybe we need a shop that can do "reversible" automatic transmission conversions. I see a nitch market here!

Not foolish. It is enjoying what you like. Besides you cannot take it with you in the end.

JP - that dog amid the cats cartoon is hysterical!
