Truffles Anyone?

I've been wanting to try truffles, as in the real-deal $750/# truffles. Are they really all they're supposed to be or is it a complete waste of money? I don't mind spending the money for a good meal but hype gives me indigestion.

There are two kinds of people who would spend that kind of money for a fungus. 1) Independently wealthy people or 2) People in a manic phase of BiPolar disorder. No, not in this lifetime would I spend that kind of $$ for Truffles and yes, I've had them (but I did not pay for them - it was at a swanky party I was once invited to)

Been digging and some folks are saying the truffle salt is good, I figure for $30 is worth a try. Our thing is food and our bucket list is all food related. Vacation for us is going somewhere and eating well. For us there's nothing like a great meal, if $30 of salt does the trick I don't mind. I wouldn't mind paying $150-$200 for a single dish but it BETTER bring the goods.

Knew I shouldn't have taken that SAM-e

Oh - TRUFFLES - I thought you meant these guys:

I think if I were ever to put fungus truffles at the top of my bucket list, I'd finish the meal with chocolate truffles coated in real gold.

(But currently, driving a Daimler or Jaguar from Prince Edward Island to Vancouver Island tops my list ...)

I can't help but think that episode was about Willy being a ladies man cause I betcha that's exactly how it went down.

I've paid $125 for a 5 course meal in Bermuda, with an extra $65 for a tip for two of us and we had all the bells and whistles with it, plus 5 waiters! What in the world is worth $750 for a meal? Did I read it correctly? No way would I pay anything close to that! That's absolutely crazy! PJ

You did read it wrong, they are $750 a pound, not a meal.

And besides, they only use a few grams of truffles in most recipes. It seems to be used more like a spice or flavoring then an actual food product...probably because it is so expensive.
