How old is it? I swear they put a "leak timer" in when they make them; 6-8 years later they leak!
I've already replaced two in my house.
P.S. Now you can make Leek soup
 
I've been told if you replace the anode every couple of years it will last forever.....and drain the carp (sp) out of the bottom.
 
I just replaced the anode in August. I tried to buy the anode at Home Depot where I bought the water heater but they don't sell the anode. Go figure.

Just put one in at my mother's house, had a builtin leak from the tank new. Poor plumber had to pull it back out, take it back and try another one.

I only buy glass/ceramic lined water heaters! Doesn't make the replaceable elements last longer, but the tank does. Also, a lot depends on your waters chemical and mineral content. Usually a whole house filter takes care of that, which is not a bad idea anyway. PJ
 
Hot water is by its nature pretty corrosive. Overly high water pressure can also do in a water heater prematurely. My granddaddy was having to get a new one about every five years back about 30 years ago, and it turned out his residential water pressure was off-the-chart too high. A pressure regulator took care of the problem. He put in a new water heater in 1988 or '89, and I replaced it last summer when it finally let go. It had been acting less than perfect for some time, but being underemployed at the time, I was trying to nurse it along.
