i have starting driving my recently acquired 1958 bn6 and i noticed...cant help but notice...that the shifter shaft turns freely in the shifter console. one time 1st gear on the knob is at twelve oclock and then it is in another position. the transmission shifts okay and the knob is securely attached but the shifter shaft turns in the transmission. is this an easy fix or something indicative of a much larger problem... thanks for any help!

At the end of the shifter "ball"(not the knob) has a nylon bushing(used to have brass(original), check that first.
