My wipers aren't working smoothly. They sometimes won't do a full sweep and will only do a 1/4 sweep or so. I'm thinking I need to lubricate the cable, which hasn't been lubed at least in the past 45 years and probably not since it left Abingdon. Any tips or suggestions? Any other diagnosis?

In order to lube the cable you have to take the whole system apart I just had my motor rebuilt and now I pretty much have to get a new cable because its bent and all the other parts even though I never go out in the rain
 
It is an absolute PITA but probably needs to be done. Take the motor out as well and give that an overhaul. I hope you enjoy crawling around in extremely limited spaces.:friendly_wink:
 
If you take the motor out and disassemble it to clean and lube, take careful note of how the 'dome' that houses the electrical contacts is oriented. If not reassembled in the correct position, the wiper blades may try to wipe your shroud instead of the window. A little birdie told me this.

Wish I had done this when the interior was out. Sounds like fun. Maybe I'll just slather the windshield with RainX and hope for sunny weather.

The deed is done, but Derek you were absolutely correct. One of the most unpleasant jobs I've had to do since fitting the bracket for my throttle pedal:



Nothing like being upside down with your head stuck under the dash with every sharp protuberance in the car jamming into you somewhere. I used to be able to do this stuff regularly with my bugeye when I was 16 with no after effects, but between stiff back, achy knee joints and rotator cuff surgery I almost had to get my wife to come over with the engine hoist to haul me out of there. Anyway, I removed the motor, cable and wheelboxes. Cleaned and greased the cable and boxes and repacked the motor gearbox and everything is functioning properly. Honey, where's the Motrin?

I had wiper motion similar to yours and several blown fuses. My problem was just the wheel boxes were almost frozen. The motor and cable were fine, I just needed to free the wheel boxes. You can take the wheel boxes off (2 screws each) without removal of the whole assembly. Once the boxes are removed you can easily tell if you need other work........
