Computer question W-8

I have one computer with windows, version 8! For some reason every time I go to shut down, it wants to download and up date before shutting down. Problem is, this is every time whether it's on for 5 mi. or 5 hrs! It always says 1 to 49 updates every time. Something is amiss, but don't know what it is. cleaned the registry etc, etc. Still does it. Any clues? PJ

Did you ever let it actually perform the update?

Cleaning the registry may not have been the best idea, since some of the Windoze update triggers are housed there. (Look for keys named "RunOnce"). I'd start by looking at the Control Panel->System and Security->Windows Update and seeing if anything looks weird. Also, Programs and Features->Installed Updates might show some problems. See if any of the "Pending" updates show as installed there.

John, These are Microsoft scheduled updates that are set to run automatically. I've tried to install them manually, they run the course of installation, the computer shuts down and re starts, but none of the updates would install. The registry was cleaned after the second failure. I've run system mechanic, advanced system care pro, mailware removal, disk defrag and many other programs, but to no prevail. I have a stick from Toshiba that will repair the computer and not loose any personal files or do a complete installation, which I don't want to do. I have a complete back up on a USB hard drive if needed, but I don't want to use it either if I don't have to. Do you think it could be a setting in the BIOs that needs changing? PJ

Here are some links that might apply, although as usual tech support seems in favor of "restoring" Windows. The second one seems to have some interesting links to common update issues. I doubt it has anything to do with BOIS settings. I can understand your not wanting to restore a complete backup. I think I'd look to see if the updates show as "Installed" - if so, Windows lets you "hide" updates but I think I'd do this only as a last resort. Another option is to return to the last "restore point" (this affects the registry only) but this can cause problems, too, depending on how old it is.

Paul - I may be missing something, but what's wrong with just letting it run the updates and shut down like it says it will do?

You don't have to sit there through the update process - just let it shut down by itself..

My two shekels.

:iagree:

Or, I can tell you how to disable fully automatic updates so you don't have to deal with any of that MSBS.
I killed all updates on XP 7 or 8 years ago.
I trust them bozos about as far as I could throw them, which ain't far.

Well I just solved my problem! Since I have Linux in my desktop and mini note book, with no issues on either, I put my files on a stick and wiped the hard drive clean then installed Linux Mint 17. Now the only computer in the house with Windows is the wifes and she has no issues. I'll see how everything goes from here. Seems like the more advanced Microsoft gets, the more issues develop and the problems multiply. I upgraded to 8.1 to see if it would rectify some problems and it actually got worse! Tired of constantly needing software upgrades, automatic or not. Linux is faster, just not as glamorious with all the bows and ribbons, but I don't want that anyway. :encouragement: PJ

I'm on Mint 17 now!

Once-and-for-all!!

Every thing is fine now! :encouragement: Would you believe, every time I turned the computer on with windows I would get, DON'T TURN YOUR COMPUTER OFF WINDOWS IS CONFIGURING OR, UPDATING YOUR SYSTEM! Twenty minutes later, if I was lucky, I could use it. Once it took an hour! Nice to be able to turn this thing on now and use it right away and not be bombarded with junk ads! PJ
