Friday morning, went back to sleep, then heard a loud "CRASH"
in front of our house.I thought that someone had hit my truck.
I look out the window,& see our Son's car (White 2002 Hundai Accent),
in the middle of the street, with a Chrysler minivan connected to it.
Son can't remember what happened,& we're praying that the other driver
is honest ( vehicles were 20-30 feet from the impact). The CHP officer that is in
charge of the report went on vacation,& won't be back until the 11th of May.
The insurance company (Farmers) said that they couldn't do anything,un-
til they get the accident report.
He just bought this car early this year, but it's totalled,so now we need to
help him find another car. He's not a "Car Guy",& not really mechanicly inclind (He-
can break a rock),so we're looking for a stone reliable,affordable car/truck.
Any ideas?

- Doug

Yikes, Doug! Hope your son is okay and all the insurance/police details work out.

As for reliable, basic transport another Accent isn't a bad idea. My old 2003 Accent is still on the road in the hands of the fellow I sold it to. Otherwise, there's a raft of basic cars (Toyota Corolla, Honda Civic, Mazda 3/Protege, Kias of recent years) that would all be decent basic transportation.

Stopped the most reputable car dealer in town,
asked him if he had any cars like that that he'd be wholesaling -
(he deals in late- model, low mileage cars,& stands behind the-
warranty on them).
He had a '96 Geo Prism,with 90k miles on it,that he
kept on the lot. This is the same car as a Corolla, built on the same
assembly line.Imported from Fremont,CA.
Anyway,the price is a little high,but we feel better,buying
from an honest dealer, rather than someone we don't know. Also, these
Corollas/Prisms are are one the most reliable cars out there.

A good choice for solid transportation, Doug. My wife had a Corolla version of a similar vintage from new. Solid little car.

My grandson drives a Prism given to him by his other grandfather. He loves it. Reliable and cheap to operate.

My old 2002 series BMW was a very good reliable car, as have been pretty much all of the Internationals I have owned. Like with any older car though a basic mechanical knowledge is helpful. I'm sorry I don't really have much to do with new cars. My wife drives a Toyota though and seems to like it well enough.

I try not to Billy, in fact before my daughter was born the only time I got in a car made after 75 was when we had to take the family van.

When was your daughter born? 1977? Just trying to get a perspective.:jester:

Haha, her momma was born in 77 she was born 2009. I just don't like 99% of modern cars. I much prefer something that has a little character and that I can easily work on, even if it doesn't have all of the "conveniences" of a new car.

Doug, I was serious about the 2002 series BMWs they are great turn key cars if you find a well sorted one.

Walt,

Son isn't a "car guy",& can break a rock.We're going for function & reliability.
Checked out the receipts that they gave me - car's had a new starter, new tires,
radiator flush,tune up,& new wiper blades,plus it's BLUE!,unlike all of the previous
White refridgerators that we've had around here!
It's funny, but parked behind the Hyundai, the Prism looks like a graceful design.
I can't believe that I actually said that.

Geos are a tough solid drivetrain. Subaru used them in the "Justy" chevy put them in the "Sprint" They are a suzuki swift drivetrain that has been put in many cars. With care you can pass 300xxx miles getting the same performance it came out of the factory with. Very similar to the civic drivetrain in that respect. just dont be surprised when you turn on the ac and feel like you hit a wall. :wall: Sounds like you found a good one to.
