Sailor from iconic WWII Photo dies

You are right; there were others who claimed they were "the sailor". Here's a line from the article that Bas has linked....

"A number of men claimed to be the sailor, but McDuffie's account was confirmed in 2007 by a forensic specialist."

Case solved!
 
I wonder how many of those statues there are. I was working on the USS Iowa for about a week and they had one on the dock. That was in San Pedro harbor.
 
I read the other day that out of the 16 million Americans who were under arms during World War II that fewer than 2 million of them are still with us. I know it's a matter of time before we start hearing the various "last one alive from..."

And thus the Boomers were born. Boy, if that didn't set the stage I don't know what could. Anyone else notice they are clenching their fists in the photo? Seems a bit odd all things considered.
