A three part mini series about the Klondike Gold Rush of the 1890's... Just broadcast this past week on the Canadian Discovery channel...

Not sure if it was broadcast on the American Discovery channel, it was filmed here in Alberta (a friend of mine was an extra) and is based on an historical non-fiction book called "Gold Diggers" by Charlotte Gray, the book and mini series uses some characters who actually were up there for the gold rush, plus some other fictional characters...

Very well done! I just finished watching all three episodes on the internet, probably would have been better on a big TV, definitely worth spending a few hours (about six in total) to watch it...

Now *that* sounds like my cuppa tea. Love shows like that. I haven't seen it listed here yet, but sure it will be.

As an aside, did you see the "Chasing Shackleton"? Guys trace Shackleton's incredible rescue mission between Elephant Island and the whaling station on South George. Totally amazing.

I've often wondered if the "gold rush" was seeded to get folks to move out west and expand the country.

Think about it, how else could you entice anyone to leave civilization for such hardships....

Funny you should mention the PBS mini series "Chasing Shackleton"! I just purchased that Mini Series on iTunes (in High Def) and have loaded it to my iPhone to watch while I'm on an upcoming business trip.
 
I was gonna watch it 'till a co-worker divulged the entire plot during break the other day....
 
"Klondike" (watched it) became a tiny bit of a soap-opera. It did seem real and I'm sure it captures a lot of the struggle with nature and other people (with tons of gritty nastiness)... but, again, it almost seemed a bit over-acted to me (but I'm picky). I did enjoy it. There was only one actor I recognized (Sam Shephard).
 
Glad you like it. How Shackleton and his team survived the *real* crisis is astounding. This modern re-creation of the voyage and crossing is excellent - but I have to keep in mind they all knew there was another boat close by. Shackleton knew they were all alone.

Imagine what was going through each man's mind in this photograph, as the small crew leaves Elephant Island, with the rest of the crew behind.
