TR2/3/3A Aero screens on Ebay

There is a different type of Aero screen on Ebay under: Triumph TR2 and TR3 Factory Original Aero screens. I know they are not supposed to be exactly like the Brooklands or even the original Aeroscreens but they somehow don't look right to me. What do others think?
 
I suppose it depends on how one interprets "Factory Original"; does that mean what might have been used on a Works Competition car (as illustrated in the eBay listing), or does that mean what might have been offered "to the public"? Here's a shot of the latter, what presumably is what one would've gotten by ordering from his/her Triumph dealer back in the day (photo from a TR Register UK Forum post):

Just my opinion, I don't claim to be an expert. But I don't believe that the screens sold under part number 700896 looked like that. Although somewhat different than the ones supplied now, they still had (partial) chrome frames and flat glass. Even Piggott mentions "a larger glass area than the type commonly sold today". I don't think he would have said "glass" if they were plastic.

No doubt there were some plexiglass screens made and used, likely the eBay seller is even telling the truth about getting some from a dealer (who likely made them himself or had them made, for his own car). But I don't believe they were ever "factory optional". The works cars had quite a few things that never made it to production (like the plastic side curtains on OVC 276); and both photos show differences to the ones being sold.

That said, it's your car. If you like them, buy & use them. I think I'll pass.

BTW, I've been told that it is illegal to drive on the street with a plastic windshield, even with a car made before all the safety regulations went into effect. Don't know if that's true or not; and maybe you could get away with arguing that it was "factory". But the police in most areas can impound cars that are "unsafe" and it seems like a risk to me.

Any idea who those people are? Looks like Kas on the right, to me. The others look familiar, but I'm terrible with faces and can't place them.
 
An interesting design and nice that it uses the original (early cars) attachment points.

I do like driving with the aeroscreen, most recently last week:

And not a single complaint from my passenger!

Sharp-eyed observers will note an Elva in the background - has a Plexiglass barchetta-style windscreen. No idea if it is legal, but not the sort of thing that gets much local scrutiny.

BTW - the same seller offering those aero screens also sells spats for the TR2/3. Look nicely made and faithful to the original. No idea how universal a fit those were.

"Kas" was my first thought as well; alas, the photo wasn't identified as to who those folks were. And I agree with you about any comments Piggott or most other "British" authors might make. They'd have been much more likely to say "perspex"! :D

Saw that one! I think it was correct, but its' need for new glass and chrome put it out of my price range. The other screens are not correct. The works screens had an Al channel around the base. I have a few pics of them, I thought of building some. I also know of a source for feet for the reproduction Brooklands that allow you to use the single holes made for the earlier TR's

Here's a pair of aftermarket aeroscreens I bought many years ago from Victoria British.

No, they came with their own pedestals that have to be screwed into the scuttle. The earlier bodies have four weld nuts in the scuttle for mounting a special bracket for the aeroscreens to attach onto. I originally had an early body and was going to make those brackets, but since my early body was rotted very badly, when a decent post 60k body showed up very cheap, I opted to go that route. Now i have a post 60k car with a TS23,xxx commission number. No concours judging for my car! :playful:
 
In the top photo, that's Bill Piggott on the left and it certainly looks like Kas on the right. The white car looks to be TS2, the first RHD production TR2, fitted with original factory aeroscreens made by Brooklands. These had legs that matched the factory fixing bolts on the scuttle, discontinued at TS32833. They also had a channel on the underside to take a cut section of a lower windscreen seal.

Factory aeroscreens always had double thickness laminated glass in a high "cupcake" shape whereas the glass is lower in the Brooklands universal fitment aeroscreens in Art's photo.
